This coin needs some help. The reverse had a glob of something on it and what might be verdigris. In hand the reverse has some luster the obverse a little on left hand side near the rim. Thoughts on Grade and more importantly, what can I do to preserve this coin. Nice condition 1872 Indians don't grow on trees. I'm loading 2 sets of pictures with different backgrounds to help. AU Details?

Lots of details on a really tough coin! I agree, AU details...and I'd expect some luster. Tough to tell from the pics, but the reverse looks fairly corroded. I'm not an expert on preservation, but this looks like it might be a good candidate for verdicare if an acetone bath doesn't help. NCS/NGC maybe.

it does have very nice details on it. Au seems about right. I am not sure if acetone will help very much. Verdicare might take off some of the gunk off the reverse and improve overall appearance of the coin. Not sure what would be underneath the verdegris though.

According to Rick Snow's Flying Eagle and Indian cent book this year is plagued with inconsistent strike quality. "Many examples were poorly struck or they are missing detail due to some liquid, such as machine oil or water, getting on the planchet or dies" In my example the reverse is very "mushy" relative to the obverse and the 8 is missing a portion of its bottom lobe.

After a little more research it appears that this is a "Broken D" variety. There are breaks in the top & bottom of the D in UNITED. According to Snow this is from a deteriorated hub. If you look closely, the lower left leg of the "A" in STATES is missing also.
I'm ordering some Verdicare this weekend, and will post pictures once it's cleaned up.
Having never slabbed a coin I'm seriously thinking this one might need to be for preservation and it's relative rarity in higher grades.
I appreciate the comments on grading!

Is the bottom of the 8 in the date broken too?

Your looking at a mid-AU coin in bad need of conservation. I would consider NCS. Not sure what they charge, never submitted anything for conservation. This is beyond verdi-care I'm afraid.
