Several months ago I came on this forum and I received a lot of help which was very much appreciated. And I need a bit more help again My dad inherited $20 double eagles. He sold most of them in France where he lives for the price of gold. But thanks to the people in this forum I told him to hold on to a few. Here are the coins that are left: 1883 1882 1884 1867 1858 s and 4 1925 D My dad wishes to sell those as well but would like me to have 2 of them which I'd keep for a long time. Which of these coins do you think are the best to keep for a long time? Also, how would you price all of these coins? I'd say the 1882 (only 571 minted). The 1882 CC had 39,140 minted. And the 1882S had 1,125,000 minted. If it was me, I'd advise him to keep them all (or give all to you).

Can you post pictures of the coins so that we can know the condition of them, because they they might be worth more. For example, the 1882 in VF is worth $10k in AU55 it's worth 60k. Seems like you have a very nice collection, I'll give you melt for them lol.

You really need to show pictures of the coins or at least a really good description of these. The value of these coins (VF-MS/PF) really goes up GREATLY with these.

Thank you all for your answers. I uploaded the pictures that came out all right as the sun was going down. Let me know if they work out! Docsfishn: I'd love it if he could give them all to me :). Unfortunatly his health is not so great and he really does need the money...

Just out of interest, I can't find it in my book by Kenneth Bressett, what is the average value of a Gold Double Eagle?

Anywhere from $725 in VF to over 100,000 in MS state (not including the S-G DE)

Numis I'd recommend getting a RedBook. It has info on almost every US coin out there and a good price guide.

I'm not sure what AF is but the ones that you have pictured look to be around $750-$900 range. It's a shame the 58 has the gash and the 67 looks discolored and disfigured at bit. Try to take some better pics and also shoot the reverses of the coins.

Hello Marie, Your pictures need to be larger, brighter, and more clear in order to estimate grades for your gold pieces. You need to verify the mint marks on these coins. The Liberty Head coins will have mint marks just below the eagle's tail feathers on the reverse. For these years, there will be an S, a CC, or no mark. The 1858 might have an O (New Orleans), but you've identified it as the more common S-mint (San Francisco). If your 1882, 1883, and 1884 coins are S mint, they will probably be worth $700-800 unless they are choice uncirculated. If they are CC (Carson City), they are probably worth $1000 and up, depending on grade. If they have no mint mark (Philadelphia), they absolutely need to be authenticated by a reputable grading service (PCGS, NCG, or ANACS). Those dates are worth thousands if authentic. You would almost certainly not get full value unless they were "slabbed" by one of these grading services. You also need to verify those 1925-D coins. The D (Denver) mintmark would be located ABOVE the date and I can't see it in your photos. That weird-looking letter below the date on these coins is the monogram of the designer, Augustus St. Gaudens. The Denver coins are worth at least $1500 and possibly much more. If there is no mintmark above the date, these are the common Philadelphia coins, worth $750 and up. Please post better front-and-back photos of each coin if possible. I'm hoping you really do have some of the rare ones!

^Andrew - I just missed one at £10 ($20) due to my parents' slow connection making me miss the close finale of bidding whilst I was at their house, would you say I've missed out on much? Or is that about the value - item was slightly worn, so probably AF and year was 1904 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....52&rd=1&rd=1^Grace - I might do this one day but at the moment I'm spending all my pennies on coins :) Such glee! How much is a RedBook anyway? - go on, advertise.. :P

Good thing you lost that auction, you were bidding on a fake coin.
