Quote: Been trying to find a reasonable 69 for an old album. "Reasonable" is a relative description. -- Is this coin acceptable to you at this time? -- How does this coin compare to the rest of your set? -- Does your "wallet" allow for a better coin? When I buy a coin I always try to do it with the idea that it's forever. I rarely think about upgrading later. But I'm an "old retired guy" so I won't be earning more money later. Young people can look forward to having more disposable income as time goes by.

Just putting together an old album for resale as I make my push for a higher grade 1877. I was just curious about the M, almost looks like doubling.

If the M was actually doubled that far off you should be seeing it on the other letters as well. The lettring on these was hubbed from a full hub not punched. So if the M was double hubbed like that all the other letters would be as well.

I bought it off that new place...Webstore. Probably just flip it if its what I think it is or put it in my number three album.

Given the grade and the knocks, damage would be my first guess.

You have by the way inspired me to keep multiple albums for certain series. (Mercs included)

Would love to see Carl's number one Merc album. I bet it's a dandy.

I got the 1869 yesterday in the mail. I believe it's a 69/69 but a worn one.

Quote: if it is an S-3 then it can be only one die pair. I guess you don't have the Snow book for 1869? In any case, there are variants within Snow-3: All with Obv 4 in die stages "A", "B", "C", paired with different reverses: "U", "G", "D", "B", "F". This is how Rick Snow names them, based on his analyis of the markers. He has classified them as Snow-3a, Snow-3b, Snow-3c, Snow-3d, and Snow-3e*. The reverse might narrow down the variety further, although it may be too worn to tell. * pp. 123-5 The Flying Eagle & Indian cent Attribution Guide, 2e 1859-1869.
