Oops. Looks like the seller has not recognized the slanted 5 either. They are close in value though. Nice catch

Should be interesting to see how much of a premium the slab error brings.

It's what they call a "mechanical error" and they will fix it for free, you just have to send it back in. Quote: 5. Customer must inspect all coins immediately upon receipt and PCGS disclaims any liability for damage or discrepancies or errors, including but not limited to errors in the description of the coin, unless reported to PCGS within five (5) days of Customer's receipt of the coin(s). Customer agrees to return any incorrectly described coin to PCGS upon request for correction and agrees to indemnify and hold PCGS harmless from any and all losses and/or claims caused by the circulation or sale of any incorrectly described coin. Of course that's only binding against the original submitter.

And you notice the seller doesn't correct the TPG's error but merely repeats it. Possible they don't know any better either.

No, it is a perfect case of everyone blindly accepting the label of the Gods that walk the earth at PCGS.
And in case you didnt catch it, that is sarcasm.

Either way the value is fair the seller is asking, and as mentioned it is only a mechanical error, which happens often enough to be disheartening by the top TPG in the business. Good catch on the coin jfransch!

Even more sad that Heritage didn't even mention the mistake. Then again, in the recent Newman World Coins sale I picked up a coin that Heritage described incorrectly, an extremely obvious mistake if you have the ONE book necessary to attribute British hammered coins.

Quote: everyone blindly accepting the label of the Gods that walk the earth at PCGS. I used to think that as well and some days I still do but in many cases of higher grade coins the third-party grading services are required. Especially if you're into investment level coins and holding them for a period of time. You have to realize that the coin in a slab will sell much better than a raw one. I also believe the third-party grading services serve a purpose for collectors who are not savvy enough to spot a counterfeit.

Quote: I used to think that as well and some days I still do but in many cases of higher grade coins the third-party grading services are required. Usually because the buyer doesn't trust his own opinion so they put their faith in the TPG. Which makes it even worse when the TPG misidentifies what they are. How do you trust them to grade it correctly when they can't correctly identify what it is?

There are ERROR coins - DDOs and DDRs and overdates and missing legs and such - and now we have an ERROR slab. Error coins are generally worth more that their non-error counterparts in the same grade. Maybe there should be a place in the coin collecting world for error slabs. If that ever happened, this slab\coin should be worth more than an identical slab\coin shown with the proper attribution. If you had a population report for all the recorded error slabs it might help you decide which TPG to use. Just sayin'...
