I bought 500 John Adams gold dollars and this is what I found so far. The T is messed. What do you think?

Is it normal to go through a total of about 8,000 coins and find no errors? Does living away from Denver and Philadelphia have anything to do with it?

I have never personally found an error in countless thousands of coins that have passed threw my hands. Most of the time it could be luck of the draw or just a good eye.

As far as location I don't think it really matters. The minted coins are shipped all over from the Mints. However Denver coins tend to start out on the West coast and Philly coins on the East.

I have gone through thousands of BU coins and found many saleable errors from new banks rolls. You do need a good eye and a good lupe.

Bank rolls are face value so all you have in them is time.

To find large amounts of errors one must obtain employment at Brinks or another armored service that works on contract for the US Mint. Many national dealers(Freddy W.) have "their" people on the sorting room floors of these operations in order to keep up the flow of new inventory. Between the Mint's QC and all of the sorting, rolling, and bagging that goes on between the Mint and the bank, it takes a lot of patience and persistence to find the coins that fell through the cracks.

Benji is correct about the major errors, that's why I love ebay as I am not going to go to work for a sorting room. Those coins found in sorting rooms end up on ebay.

As for new bank rolls, you do not find usually find major errors, although it IS possible.

Some errors that could be found in Bank rolls are, Off metal strikes, on center double strikes, die adjustment strikes, Missing clad layer strikes, Double denomination strikes, Copper wash strikes, clips, blanks, massive die cracks and Cuds, major strike-through, no edge lettering, double strike edge lettering, split or cracked die strikes, Double dies, and many others.

Bank rolls cost you nothing except time and you will learn a great deal about die varieties.

I found 6 mintmark variations out of 10 rolls of wheats last night! What a great score! Unfortunately, I am having trouble looking at my monitor this morning. :(

Make sure you check out https://www.coppercoins.com's varieties. Some of them are so slight that I passed up three of the varieties until I double checked all of the 'D' marks.

So I suppose the bottom line is it isn't worth checking rolls of coins for errors unless you enjoy getting your hands black and becoming nearsighted for the rest of the day. I personally would have been much more happy at my job actually making money those many hours instead of looking through thousands of dirty pennies and dollars. (But don't get me wrong, I love coins) The reason I got startd in cherrypicking is because I would rather find my own goodies and sell them than buy it from other people to invest in.

BBY...don't despair! You will find errors, but all things take time. If one could find them easily, then we could all find them easily, and they wouldn't have value!

Its a big hobby, with many niches for folks of different personalities and interests. If looking for hours and hours, days and days, through coins in search of that elusive "big find" isn't your cup of tea, that's fine. (It isn't mine...though when I was younger, and just getting started in the hobby, I had no way to add to my collection except through searching rolls of pennies, nickels, dimes, etc.)

Best of luck

These forums and many of you in it have been a great help. I think I'll search maybe another 5,000 pennies and despair at the end of that if I don't find anything. And if I find anything iffy I'll post it here to avoid littering the forums with "is this an error?" "what about this one" "surely this must be an error" type of topics.

I think I'll pass on that really small cup of cofee and get my $500 back for now. They gave me a big bag to put all the coins in so I'll be real fun showing off to those people in line at the bank my treasure. And the security gaurds and tellers won't think I have a bomb with me (I always see them staring and always taking quick glances at me and my boxes). I swear- If I ever put a turban on they'll arrest me on the spot if they see me carrying any kind of box with me.

some of my best finds I found in mint bag's. the good coins don't fit in a roll so they get rejected first (the mint don't roll there own coins) they go to the bank to be rolled. but the bags come from the mint and you are the first to hold them and look at them at less than light speed lol so if you want to find the nice errors get the bags from the mint and search them. (you wont find an error in every bag) I have searched hundreds of bags and found just a few.

I've been going to the same bank for Presidential dollars and I keep getting sintered errors and die obstruction errors and been getting a good return for them on ebay. I guess you just have to try different banks and keep going to the same one for them? Works for me

Sleaklight, yes it's true when you find a bank with errors in their rolls, that all of the rolls (from the same batch) from that bank should have the same errors.

Due to quality control at the mint, sometimes it takes searching many thousands of coins to find one error. I coin roll hunt, have been thru many thousands of rolls and have found less than a dozen errors (double clipped nickel, triple clipped penny, two single clipped halves, struck thru half (wire), another struck thru half (reeding shaving)). Have also found MANY of the 1974D DDO, so those varieties are not at scarce as some folks think.
