Okay, so I'm still buzzed at winning this awesome slabbed MS-65 1947 Balboa on ebay for just $40 shipped, because it's the first ebay auction I've ever bid on, much less won:
Ebay-Speculation
291056210348
(catalog value for BU [usually considered to be MS-63] is $75)

But why did it go so low? ANACS is at least somewhat reputable, right? Meanwhile, the same coin slabbed in a lower grade (MS-63) by a less reputable TPG (ICG) is already at the same price I got mine for, with more than twice as many bids, and 18 hours (as of this writing) left on the clock!
Ebay-Speculation
191035062161

Both started at $0.99, both had roughly equal shipping rates (mine was $8, the other's $10)

So... what is the difference between these two coins that are hopefully different in quality but not price?

- Do the good pictures make a huge difference? (Does this disprove the existence of TPGs allowing a safe sight-unseen sales environment?)
- Do people not trust items shipped from Greece, even from a 100% positive seller?
- Is it the toning that makes such a difference?
- Is ICG actually a really conservative, great grading company?
- Is ANACS actually a terrible grading company?
- Was my listing poorly written, and so not as many people saw it?
- Is ebay just a random environment where anything can happen?

Plus, I think the eye appeal appears better in the ICG coin, although that could just be the photography skills. Nice pickup.

A lot of different things imo. Pictures do make a huge difference on ebay, greece isn't the most ideal place to buy from even slabbed, there is some randomness to ebay depending on whose looking at what when, and blast white coins usually do pretty well.

The good pictures thing doesn't really disprove the sight unseen thing as thats always been a more common method of buying for dealers than collectors. If you have the choice between something with an okay picture and a great picture people will almost always bid more on the one they can clearly see everything else being equal.

Even with all that had that coin not been shipping from greece it likely would have fetched more.

I would have to go with: 1) Greece 2) Eye appeal and 3) Strange things can happen on ebay.

Sunday evenings, especially during AFC and NFC playoff games, are probably bad times for sellers to end auctions. But who knows. Either way, great pickup.

Recall the oft repeated adage 'Buy the coin, not the slab'.
The ICG piece definitely has the better eye appeal of the two.
ebay can be extraordinarily random. I say this with 15 years' experience, both buying and selling.
There is no way to know who may be looking for any particular collectible item at any particular time.
For a low demand item with lots of availability, buyers can afford to pick'n'choose and pass over anything that brings questions to the mind that aren't answered via the posted photos.
Shipping from anywhere outside the bidder's home base is going to be a huge factor, both cost and risk-wise.
Catalog values are not a reliable guide to ebay results or to 'true' value.
Sunday evening has always been a *great* time for sellers, in my experience.
So add up all the comments received here, factor that blast white full moon into your experience, and draw your own conclusions.

ICG is an excellent TPG.

Eye appeal. I'm not sure why TPGs seem to have decided to completely ignore it. That, and shill bidders.

ICG coin is blast and looks to be accurately graded, your coin not sure due to bad picture. Also the overseas seller is probably a huge factor. Hopefully it all works out to your benefit. By the way I do like the look of your coin

I like the look of the coin you got much more than the blast white one.

One reason for lower prices from some countries is trust in their postal service. It could be quite some time before you get money back of it is stolen. And there are people who think international buying is difficult, or has hidden charges. This works in your favor when you get a great find.

Ironically, the coin from America not only had $10 shipping but a $5.50 import charge... while the Greek one only had $8 shipping. Hidden charges indeed! I guess this would be different if you live in the USA.
