In an old capital holder. I don't want to remove it for better pics.

Oh, dear. This one is exceptional even for you, noD. B-4. I hesitate to come down on the AU/BU divide due to the lighting, but it seems to me that the flattening in the stars is as-struck, and I'm having a difficult time seeing anything resembling wear on the reverse. All the same, I'm thinking there are too many visible marks - especially obverse - to be consistent with an Uncirculated coin. So I'm going to call it AU57, but if a TPG called it MS63 it wouldn't be a surprise. All pure speculation, though. I quite understand why you're unwilling to break it from the holder - I wouldn't, either - but it makes accurate opinion much more difficult.

What's the mark coming out of the hair towards S11? Is that on the holder?
Lighting is tough, I'm in at AU on the high end of the scale

I think a TPG would grade this mint state. I would go 62 on it unless there is a lot more luster I am not seeing. It looks like it has been dipped.

Brilliant cartwheel luster. A bit darker than pics show.

I'm thinking the holder has a bit to do with the apparent finish - by now, pretty much all Capital holders have seen better days. More's the pity - they have value of their own these days.

I don't see any wear personally. That is a nice coin :-)

If I were to send this to a TPG, which one? I saw the details for the first time when I took these photos.

I would not be surprised to see MS 64 TPG will allow a mark or two with fields that nice and that strike. I just went back to look and I don't think it's been clean I'm sticking with ms 64. Unless you want to sell it to me then it's an au55

Quote:If I were to send this to a TPG, which one? Sorry - I missed this, laughing at Mikey's post. Don't bother slabbing it unless liquidation is in this coin's near future. Even if the cost of grading goes up in the future, it won't change all that much as a percentage of the coin's value. If liquidation is in order, use PCGS for their current advantage in the marketplace. This one gets pricey in Mint State.

Beautiful piece. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say MS63
