Ok, so for two days I've been chatting back and forth with a person about their Craigs list add. He/she listed 1000+ coins for sale. Is it odd that he/she won't tell me what he/she has for sale? The person is willing to meet halfway and even said that they'll be willing to split the collection. He/she finally told me they wanted $4-5.00 a piece for them (which is way over my budget being a total of @ $4,000.00). Do you think it's just being cautious on the sellers part that they won't divulge in the contents of the collection? We're supposed to meet early this week. Monday or Tuesday.

My first instinct is its either all low value junk or its a scam. Once the total value has been given theres no added advantage to not saying way it is unless of course its all stolen and they dont want to advertise it

All I got for an answer is "It's nice stuff." Text and e-mail.

I couldn't even get an answer on if it's U.S., foreign or mixed.

If you can't get an answer about what it is, I wouldn't recommend going.

Perhaps your bit of the States is totally safe.
I wouldn't go and meet anyone with thousands of dollars in my pocket to buy unspecified goods and I live in peaceful low-crime Scotland where people don't carry guns.
I did once respond to someone who wanted an average of £1 each for all his coins - he said they were hundreds of years old with kings he hadn't heard of.
They turned out to be common date pennies, halfpennies, and farthings in very circulated condition, all less than 100 years old - not worth anything, then. I resented the fare money wasted but I was even more annoyed with myself for wasting many hours on a wild goose chase. He was very cross and, I suspect, sure that I was cheating him but as I didn't buy any, I couldn't understand that.

So you are thinking about meeting someone you don't know, who has coins and won't tell you what they are, and the sale is for around $4,000? OH....now I get it, good joke!

Sounds like trouble to me. Even more if they are not willing to tell what they are selling.

He'll probably stab you to death. There is absolutely no way this will be any kind of good deal.

Actually, he/she put the asking price of $4-5.00 a piece which would be 4-5k for the 1,000+ coins. I let the person know that wouldn't work for me. I let him know I'm willing to spend 2-3 hundred dollars and thanks for his/her time. The seller e-mailed me back that they'd be willing to split up the collection. The main reason I inquired about his ad, was because they didn't state what was for sale. I'm always looking for LWC and foreign coins in bulk. If, I do meet this person, it will be in a very populated area. So what kind of scams are we talking about anyway? Also, how is one to know if they're selling stolen coins, Beside overall impression and maybe too good to be true? If the coins are in certified holders, is there a web-site I can verify owners with?

Wise choice. Due diligence mandates staying away from shady deals like this transparent joke of a scam.
