Ask them to meet you at your local sheriff's office!

This person is demonstrating the numismatic mindset making me think he's a regular buyer on HSN.

IF I said I have a car for sale but I will not tell you what year it is, what make, how many miles on it and not even tell you if it runs, would you buy it? THINK. Never buy anything sight unseen. Never take a bundle of cash anywhere to make such a silly, almost dumb, deal.

My first instinct is that it's a stolen collection and the seller doesn't want to be found by the victim. I can't think of any other reason to be so shady on a 1000 coin deal. I'd call the sheriff and tell them about it - they're the best ones to match it with a recent crime.

For the record, I've never bought anything off HSN.
I was thinking the odds were about 50/50 on the whole Craigslist thing. If you look at my original post I was asking if it was odd that the seller wasn't telling me what the contents of the collection was. I wasn't sure if the seller was just being cautious or not.
This was the first time trying Craigslist for purchasing coins. I've purchased off E-bay with pretty good luck. I have purchased coins by word of mouth with pretty good luck. One of my purchases, the seller had no clue what she had, so therefore I had no clue until I got there. The way I had it figured, if it was junk, I wouldn't buy it.
As far as purchasing a vehicle. I've bought and sold at least eighteen over the years. Some bad deals (lemons), but mostly came out ahead. If a person doesn't know what they have? Sure I'll take a look...but I'll never commit to a purchase until I've seen it for myself.
Who said I was going to buy these coins blind? If I had decided to go meet with this person, that's not a commitment to buy.
How did this thread go from me asking opinions on the sellers intentions, to basically calling me stupid for even thinking about it?
I would think a stupid person would just go without hesitation. I at least had the mind to ask opinions on the deal. Which by the way is a "no deal" thank you very much.

Jaymon74, I don't read anyone here questioning your judgement, only offering advice.

I see it! Quote: This person is demonstrating the numismatic mindset making me think he's a regular buyer on HSN. Quote: For the record, I've never bought anything off HSN. I think... "this person" is the shady Craigslister, not any member of this forum.

Jaymon74: I can assure you that SsuperDdave was not talking about you, but referring to the craigslist seller. I've never seen SsuperDdave be anything but polite on the forums.

I apologize for any misunderstanding, Jaymon - I firmly believe that if I'm misconstrued, it's my own fault for failing to be sufficiently clear and not that of the other party.

Here is another possible motive. Out coin club sponsors coin shows. Lately, we have had a security issue. Apparently, some of the customers have been followed home. So, you elect to not buy, but have identified yourself as a person who collects, and worse carries a large sum of money. Even if the person does not follow you, can you be certain the person does not have an accomplice who will? Do not even allow this person to meet you would be my advice.

So.... is the general consensus, not to buy coins on CL? Or is it just to stay away from situations such as the one I posted about? If the folks on here have bought on CL, what is it that makes you comfortable with the deal? Oh, SsuperDdave, No hard feelings. Though most all of the folks here are helpful and courteous, I have had my share of bashing on subjects such as this one. I just felt it was starting to go there again and was getting !
