I've been communicating through email with a man who is wanting to sell some of his WWII era Nazi coins (no silver). They range from 1936-45 in date and I'm buying many of the duplicates that he has, without any key dates.

I was curious as to what I should be paying per coin depending on the denominations. I'm thinking of buying different denominations of his reichspfennigs, including 1, 5, 10, 50.

He also said this in one email:
"As a heads up as well due to the metal composition of the coins, a lot of them look very dark or the details hard to make out. If you search online you will see what I mean."

Is that cause for concern, and knowing that what sort of prices should I be looking for offering him? I'm going to get pictures soon and then I'll try to upload those.

Any other thoughts, comments, questions, or concerns are welcome.

Thanks!

The metal composition statement could be due to the zinc. That would be normal, but as with any coin, you should likely see them before committing.

He just got back to me with a picture. I'll upload it when I'm back on my laptop. I knew they were zinc and expected that to be why. At first glance it didn't look too bad. I'll post it in about an hour (after class).

Duncan, 1-5-10 reichspfennigs dates between 1940-1945 are composed mostly of zinc, therefore the dark appearance. It is normal for a circulated zinc coin to be very dark.
if they are brilliant and in mint state, they're similar to uncirculated steel US pennies in surface colour.
the pfennigs (Germany Cents) are mostly common and cheap coins.
if you are, on the other hand, buying silver 2 or 5 marks, it is an entirely different area.
hope this helps.

I wouldn't pay more than 50 cents each without seeing them. A nice graded UNC example can sell for 40-80 bucks, so a particularly nice coin might be worth paying as much as 10-20 dollars for. But generally they are plentiful and not worth much.

If the zinc ones are especially corroded, then I wouldn't even buy them at all.

Here are 25 of the coins he sent me a picture of, what do you guys think pricewise seeing this. I'm not trying to break the bank or make a complete set. I could easily pass these up I just thought they were interesting historically.

Those pink copper coins have been very badly cleaned, I think I can see scrape marks. Very, very undesirable. Two of the other coppers are pretty ugly as well... the other two look nice though!

The zincs all look like your average zinc coins. I can see why they are duplicates. $5 would be generous.

Here are the denom's available that I picked out. I have a preference for "A" mint mark since, but some he doesn't have.
1c: 37a, 38e, 39b, 40a, 41a, 42a, 43a, 44b
2c: none
5c: 40a, 41a, 42a, 43a
10c: 40a, 41a, 42a, 43a, 44d
50c: 40a

So I guess I'm looking for some help here, a type of "Guess the Price". I learned a lot about these types of coins, mint mark, composition, denominations, etc. in the past few days. Pricing I'm sort of in the dark about still.

For these 18 coins as shown, none of which he has listed as key dates and many are duplicates.
What would you think a fair price is?

Ps, nalaberong, those pink copper coins look horrible and that jumped out to me. Zinc ones aren't too bad.

50 reichpfennig is the good coin of that lot - the rest are just average mixed-bin items. I'd stand by $5.

"I would Ideally I would like to get 1.25 per coin, my reasoning being that if searched for individually on ebay you could pay upwards of $2 or $3 per coin. I should like to submit my offer of $25 shipped."

I sent a link of this thread to him and that was his reply. They're not in horrible condition but that still seems a bit high for them. In total I'm buying 17 coins, not 18. He would like to keep the 50c. So do you think I should do this or not?

I would argue that is much too high seeing as these 19 coins went for less (and it had THREE 50 reichspfennig coins in nice condition).

Nope - that's a lot of money for 20c items in my catalog.

Of course individual coins sell for big money on ebay, there is shipping and fees and uninformed buyers' mania for poorly described Nazi coins - nothing sells on ebay for under $2. You can probably find a great bulk lot for less, or find a European source where these coins are much more common and much less desirable (the historical mania is more diminished in Europe when it was your country that was forced to make and use these nasty zinc things - see the mint-mark B for Vienna). I recommend the website Numista - some users have hundreds of reichpfennigs to trade off and you'll almost certainly find a better price than $25 for a similar pile of cleaned and worn coins.

nalaberong, I am so thankful for you and CCF in general. I knew nothing about these types of coins and now I know enough to where I wouldn't get ripped off. I'm in no need of these coins but just for the historical aspect. I'll see if I can knock the price down, and if not, I'm walking away. thanks all.

I'd hold out, I've seen a lot of Nazi coins out there in much better condition at good prices too... I have found antique dealers and the occasional Gun/Coin/Relic shops to have some nice ones.

I just picked up a nice 1941 D 10 reichspfennig and a 1939 F 1 reichspfennig at my last coin club meeting. The zinc is a nice EF-AU and the copper is red unc. There are others out there much better.
