A closeup of the area(s) in question would be helpful. At first glance, maybe the coin had been cleaned and the parts of shadowing were hard to get to

i can't get my camera to zoom any closer, trying to find a program on my mac to make the changes you're asking for. I would agree with the cleaning theory but if you look at the word "land" you can see it also and there is much more room in that area for cleaning then the others.

If I had to guess, I'd call it a seriously worn die.

High tech is nice but low tech can work, a magnifying glass can make the world of difference

Another Michigander! A number of the CCF members will chime in to help you as they did already.

I take some pretty snazzy closeups with a cheapo plastic 6x magnifying glass held right up to my camera phone. It makes it function like a macro lens and you can get really close up. As for the coin...looks like a worn die, so worn that the coin you are holding was likely very near the bitter end of its service life.

A larger picture would help. you should be able to just open the pic with Preview and resize it to post here.

I've seen this effect on many Pennies. Usually in the 90's. Not exactly sure what causes it but appears to be like an over stamping. Or as already stated from worn dies. On the Pennies the Zinc starts to appear as with that similar shadowing effect. Need a Mint die expert here on this one.
