Hi there, first post.

Wondering IF anyone can tell me about the error on this CAD penny dated 1981? What is this error called, and does it have any value to it ?

Thanks, be gentle. I am new....LOL 1981-Penny---->--Error-Or-Not-?

That looks like damage to the coin after it left the mint ( PMD)
If that is the case, it would not have more than face value.

Its a split planchet. Nice error.
Please post a picture of the obverse side(head) and weight if possible.

From the photo provided, this looks like a split planchet error - specifically, a "planchet split before strike" error. Nice coin!

There are prices here http://www.coinscan.com/mintingvari.../splitp.html but the web page is old and the value is probably higher now.

Hope the NEW pics of the other side posted above help on this.....and how small the width is for better clarification.

Obviously the weight would be a lot less than a regular penny

Thanks

The obverse image confirms that this is a planchet-split-before-strike error.

The planchet was split, leaving texture on one side and a smooth surface on the other side. When it was struck, the planchet was thinner than normal, resulting in a weak strike seen on both sides.

Hey folks.

I have a very similar penny. Same year. Weighs 1.68g Not as in nice as shape. Could one of you experts please confirm if mine is a split planchet?

Love it. Any one think it possible that these are the same planchet but split? There will probably be a marker of some sort left by the dies to confirm they were struck with same dies. Bet they were. LOLOL Love it.
