I put one of these two 1810/09 Classic Head Large Cents in Lay-A-Way and I am stumped on the grades. This series of Large Cents is hard to find in problem-free condition, let alone finding two that are fairly close in condition but being miles apart in price. As you can see from the holders, one is PCGS (top) and the other NGC (bottom). My question to you; what grades do you think the TPG'ers gave for these two Large Cents? Thank you for your interest! They both look great, very original, the first one has some small digs in the obverse field which may kick it down a bit, the second one has much less strike detail in at the edge, the denticles are almost gone on both sides. I like the second coin's reverse the best of all sides except the rim flaw (which looks more like the planchet than a hit), the color is cool. Overall though I prefer the first coin in PCGS holder, even with the little digs on the obverse. PCGS said - VF30 NGC said- VF25 Guess I'm in line with vermontensium's TPG guesses as well, I just read his post! I'd call either of them as solid EAC VF20 grade. And cool that there are two coins that were struck from the same die set over 200 years okay, in basically the same exact condition! There are a few out I've seen at some of the EAC dealer sites in slabbed EF range for $600-900 they are a touch more detail than these two, Shawn Yancey had a nice one the other week and Chris McCawley still has a couple listed that are really nice (AU-MS), Hannigan has a F12 under graded up for sale. This becomes a pretty tough and pricy coin above VF.

Both nice coins! I am seeing F15 (...maybe squeaking VF20) for both. Nice original color!

top coin, vf-20. bottom, f-15. they are very close detail wise, but the top coin has a much stronger rim on both sides....so I'd guess it is a higher grade.

I am not going to offer grades, cause I don't know much about grading these, but IMO the bottom one has better eye appeal for me. Less hits on the obverse. I dont think the reverse hit at 11 o'clock on the bottom one ruins the appeal for me.

I like the top (PCGS) coin better. The strike and rims are stronger. Denticles are more complete on the PCGS coin as well. Both are strong VF. I agree with the VF-25 camp.

F15 maybe VF20 for both. Possible details grade for top coin.

They are both "problem-free".
I am glad that I am not the only one who likes them both for different reasons.

Oh, by the way, both are VERY nice LC's. I'd be happy with either but I like the bottom one best.

The NGC version does have a more emphasized over date 1/0, which caught my eye along with the fully separated ear outline. The strong rims grabbed my attention on the PCGS version. It's not quite the customary 24 hours, but here are the slabs; Kinda surprising huh?

Wow PCGS is grading right in in-line with EAC standards it seems! Both are so nice though. At least I nailed on of the two dead on.
