In the next couple of days I'll be mailing a few "higher value" coins in to PCGS. I'm planing on using a small flat-rate box and using registered mail. Does that sound to y'all like the way to go?

I personally prefer express mail for under 5k packages since its faster and basically the same price, but registered is fine and what would be used for over 5k.
Just make sure to rubber band the flips together and bubble wrap the heck out of the inside of the box so they cant move around at all to prevent them from getting scratched in transit. Tape it down good too, small flat rates have been known to pop open without support.

Thanks, registered is what I figured since it will be well over 5k (but under 25k, I think). Hopefully the small flat-rate box, bubble wrap, and a crapload of tape will do the trick.

I don't see anything wrong with the way you are doing it. Just in case you didn't know, only paper tape is allowed with registered mail. I found that out the first time I mailed something by registered mail.

Make sure you use the special brown post office approved sealing tape over all the seams on the package. My post office is a stickler on that.
Register Priority should do fine. Insure it for the full value of the contents.
I've never lost a Registered mail item.

One dealer I buy from insures with Lloyds of London. I asked at the post office, and was told even if I pay for postal insurance coins are not covered. You may want to ask, but at a different time than when you actually mail. No point in tempting someone. I believe Paypal, which covers most of what is sold on ebay, also does not cover coins.

The ebay insurance doesn't cover coins unless theyve changed it, but usps insurance does cover numismatic coin. That doesn't mean itll be easy to get a payout but its covered at least. If you ship a ton of stuff all the time its more than likely cheaper to have it covered privately and thats really youre only option if youre sending shipments over 25k. I dont think usps covers bullion though. Fedex and UPS are the ones that dont cover any coins unless they changed their policy at some point

Quote: I asked at the post office, and was told even if I pay for postal insurance coins are not covered. They are wrong. It says right in the own manual in Sec 600 that collectible coins can be insured for the numismatic value. Just be prepared to prove that value. You can't insure non-collectible spending type cash When it comes to bullion it is a bit more tricky They say except for Registered, the maximum reimbursement for bullion is $15, but they don't give a maximum figure for Registered bullion, which would lead me to believe it should be covered to the amount declared. But they don't actually say so.

Right Conder, I looked it up myself some years ago because of the folklore floating around the web. As far as proof, they say an online auction or email showing the sale is sufficient.

Good to know on the tape, just need to find someplace around here to get it. Package value will ~16k (2 coins), want to do it right.

"Doing it right" in this case - considering the value - should involve video of the packaging process. And yes, I'm paranoid. Just because I'm paranoid by nature doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

If the value is going to be $16K, it will have to be sent Registered, that's the only service that allows for insurance over $5K. Fortunately Registered mail is very very very safe. But it IS slower on delivery, so don't get concerned if it doesn't show up as having arrived after three of four days. Registered can easily take a week or two for delivery, and a MONTH or more is not unheard of (but is unsual.)

I actually did video the coins going into the box. I shipped it Registered mail in a priority mail box. Postmaster said it would probably be there in 2 days, 3 tops. He was really picky about the tape, even added another strip on the "flap side". He knew what PCGS is..leaned over the counter and asked if I'd show them to him after they came back! Gotta love small town post offices!

Dont get in a hurry with Registered mail.I sent a package to Anacs on 2-3-14 and it hasnt made it there as of today. The usps doesn't track this type of mail just when it leaves and at the destination. I personally will not use it again.

The whole point about Registered mail is that every single individual who touches the package is on record by name. Just because you can't see all that information online doesn't mean it lacks stringent control. And good luck getting insurance over $5000 on any other USPS product.
