The estate sale people I work with took a very large collection in on consignment over 20 years ago. They told me they rented a safe deposit box at the time & when they put the coins in it was too heavy to lift. These 2 coins turned up when they were moving some inventory. I have to wonder what the rest of the collection looked like. They have offered me these 2 coins at what may or may not be a good price. Unfortunately I don't know enough about them so I'm hoping someone can help me out with grades & especially value. The first coin is labeled 1723 Rosa Americana. It is approximately 22mm & weighs in at 4.6 grams on my scale. Too bad it's holed.

It may be holed, but I believe this is the "uncrowned rose" variety of the Rosa Americana halfpenny, described as "rare and elusive," with a correspondingly hefty price tag. Can somebody check my work?

Looks to be the uncrowned version.

Yeah....1723/2 Uncrowned. This with the Voce Populi you listed make a nice pair.

Another confirmation of the uncrowned variety and it does appear to be the overdate. The hole really drops the value unfortunately.

I checked the RedBook before I posted these. I was pretty sure this was the rarer uncrowned variety. Without having any knowledge about strike weakness etc I put both of these coins somewhere in the F to VF range. Does that sound about right? Is there anything to suggest either of these 2 coins are fake? Are the weights & measurements within spec? I've been considering dipping my toe into the Colonial waters but don't want to jump in over my head. Any valuation info would be appreciated on either coin.

IMO, the hole really rules out a fake.
Also, only avoid modern fakes. Contemporary counterfeits are collectible in their own category.

I'm operating from a standpoint of no existing knowledge when I started looking, but it appears that this piece should be worth more than the Voce Populi, even with the hole.

Quote: I'm operating from a standpoint of no existing knowledge when I started looking, but it appears that this piece should be worth more than the Voce Populi, even with the hole. I was under the same impression. The 2007 Red Book(only 1 I have) shows a price of $900 in VG & $1750 in F. I know Red Book prices are high & those figures are out of date....but it would seem like this coin is rare enough that even holed it should be worth a fair amount. On the other hand, I noticed in the Voce Populi thread colonialjohn gave the Rosa a value of $25. I was also under the impression he knew a good bit about colonials so I don't know what to think.

According to the latest PCGS Coinfacts, they've only got 8 Uncrowned in slabs, only one AU58 being better than VF25.

This coin has a hole and light corrosion but yes, considering it's rarity, even with the issues, It's worth far more (monetarily) than the Voce. I know I'd pay more for it.
