Assuming they aren't key dates, is there a general consensus on how good of condition Mercury dimes must be to be worth more as coins than as silver? I've got a couple from the 40's that are VF or XF; wondered if I'd get more from them than melt value. Thanks for your help!

You can get a small premium for xf ones probably vf too with patience. Right now the melt value will be greater than the premium though. Vf xf is usually about where some premium kicks in but its not much for common ones. For later dates the real premiums will be in full band higher ms grades. There are a few dates where fb are rare and will have a nice premium in any grade as well.

General rule (which does have exceptions) would be the later the date in the series the easier itll be to find nice higher grade ones.

not too much over melt on common dates...common dates are dead money in this series, even at MS FB as there are so many around and on ebay especially.

I would check the Mint Marks for varieties and over date. The 40's need to be in AU and above to get any premium.

You have to be carefull with Mercury dimes. More and more large and small Mint marks are popping up. No one really has any values for those for now. For example the 45 Micro S is worth more than a normal S so this may end up being true of the others. Then too, be carefull of the 42's. There are those famous 42/41 and 42D/41. The 26S, 32D, 21, 21D are jus some of the other more expensive ones. At most coin shows the average Mercury dime, in even poor condition goes for about $3 and up. Mercury dimes are famous for rotated reverses so check for those too. Some are so rotated they demand a premium price.

They have to be a key date, a rotated die or other error, or a really high grade. XF for early ones to AU for the later ones.

Yeah Mercury dimes don't sell well if they're common dates. On ebay they sell for around melt with small or no premium.
Same for Barber dimes too. I was picking them up for melt value...
