Search engine doesn't seem to turn up much.
I am getting quite a collection of series as well as individual coins that interest me. Problem is, I'd like to concentrate more on the rare coins, those with values higher than face value. I'd like to spend some time going through what I have to see if I just happen to have some "special" items.
Is there a comprehensive list of what to look for out there?

I have the 2014 version of the Red Book as well as the Blue book. And, yes, the information I'm asking for is there, in the book, but I'm looking for a "lazy man's" list.. something like, 'Small Cents - date1, date2, date3 with certain mine mark, etc., etc.' A quick reference of sorts.

The problem with that request is the list would be insanely long. Everythings worth more than face in the right condition. The closest your going to get to a list like that is to just check a price guide and familiarize yourself with what has higher prices than its counter parts. http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtmlThats a site you can browse through and see the different ballpark prices for different things in different grades.

What is "insanely long" is my learning curve, lol.
There is so much information that I am not able to retain even a small fraction of it, and at my age, I'm not sure I have enough time to make it worthwhile. I'll keep trying though... Perhaps I should start compiling my own list.
Thanks for the response.

Quote: I'm looking for a "lazy man's" list I get that this is somewhat "Tongue in Cheek".....BUT....Much of the fun of numismatics is doing the research for yourself. imo. Sorry if I am coming off rude....but nothing good comes easy. Numismatics is no exception.....

Quote: There is so much information that I am not able to retain even a small fraction of it Honestly no one without decades of experience or a photgraphic memory is able too. Pick a few things you like and memorize what the better dates are. Use tricks like for Seated Liberty dimes the 1840s O ones have a big jump for value in VF. Thats true for 4 of the 5 and the cheaper one of the group is the first one (1841 o) with the third (1843 o) being the most expensive. But thats why most people check their phones or price guides buying stuff or like ebay because you can research what youre looking at. Its easier to get into trying to remember general chunks of info or rules for something and just concentrate on a few things you like. Going at it date by date mint by mint grade by grade by for everything is just an information overload.

You need to decide what your collecting objectives are and then proceed toward the achievement of them on a planned basis. If you don't feel inclined to put too much effort into objective-setting and planning, buy a Morgan dollar book and fill all the holes with the best coins you can afford. It'll take some time and definitely cost some money, but you'll end up with something worth the effort.

No, I don't take an honest response as rude, even though I was mostly serious with the "lazy man's" list.
As I mentioned before, there is so much information out there that it is particularly overwhelming for me. I just thought that perhaps someone had compiled a list of coins to search for by denomination. With all of the books, lists, and quides available, it just seems reasonable to me that someone has compile a list of rare coins by denomination, not considering error coins, that collectors desire over others. My only point of reference right now is mintage numbers. That is kinda vague for a "desireability" scale.
And, I have no problem with "due diligence". I'll be happy to do mine if that is the right and proper way to learn this thing.

It is, if youre just interested in key date coins just go through the price guide and mark down what starts out the most expensive. Most of the keys will slap you in the face with their starting price. The semi keys will be significantly high than their peers but not as insanely priced. http://www.usrarecoininvestments.co...te_coins.htmTheres somewhat of a cheat sheet of the ones that would immediately stand out with their prices in a price guide.

It is a really good starting place though.. I can build onto it. Who knows with all of these jugs of coins I have, maybe I'll find one on that list.

Quote: Perhaps I should start compiling my own list Exactly, just get a small pocket sized notebook and start scribbling or start a simple text file (spreadsheets scare me), and databases can be confusing too, then just print it out and cross them off as you go. The best way to learn is to ask questions so just pick one or two series that are similar and tell us which ones you have and which you need and we can let you know how bad the heart attack is going to be from sticker shock Don't give up on the search engine, I just found this one from 'nickelsearcher', " Jefferson nickel Mintage Fun Facts" https://goccf.com/t/170876Some great stats there, also a good idea of the variety of only circulation strikes in just one series ! That's not even counting the errors , or the varieties , or Proof strikes ! There is a lot to learn never get discouraged and keep asking questions

Asking for a list of collectable coins is like asking for a list of crooked politicians. All of them.
