It definitely isn't Greek, or any other ancient. It's certainly Islamic, and probably Indian, but there's nothing pictorial about either side - it's just Arabic text on both sides. Unfortunately, there's not enough Arabic script to allow me to ID it.

The weight does not fit into the more modern Indian rupee standard - it's too heavy for a half-rupee.

Just wondering if this has been silver plated at some time?
If so it could just be a ½ Paisa from the Indian State of Arcot.

Hello Andy,

It doesn't look silver plated to me. But I can be wrong though. Tryed to look for coins from Arcot but they are hard to find on the internet.

I did notice the Arcot coppers while flicking through the Indian States coins in Krause, looking for yours.

If it is a silver-plated copper, it wouldn't be the first one we've seen here lately. This thread has a brass Dehli Sultanate coin, plated to look like a rupee.

Hello,

I got this reaction about this coin. From an indian who does research about these coins. But not an real clear answer. Maybe it helps? I don't have these books though..

Hi Vincent,
This coin probably belongs to British India/Dutch India from around 1700. They use to copy late Vijayanagar Empire coins. Refer Pridmore book on Coins of Commonwealth nations.
Thank you,
Regards
Dr Jinadatha.
