So I don't get the grey sheet. The best I can do to look up what I should pay for a coin (ballpark) is to go to PCGS or NGCs website. Another thing I do is look up ended auctions at ebay for the coin with the grade and see what they went for. Is there anywhere else that I might go for true pricing on a coin? Would love to read everyone's thoughts on this. See what other people do. The Red Book to me is way off and the TPG's pricing also seems high on some coins.

I usually look at a few online coin dealers to get an idea of the general retail price.

ebay is the best since you can see what people are paying. Numismedia is pretty good for a ballpark for rare items that dont have a history on ebay.

Worthpoint is good, but, user unfriendly and costs $15/mo.....Terapeak will give you 1 year of ebay sold listings and is user friendly, but, most of the older listings don't have pictures and costs $10/mo. Currently I use both, but, I will only be renewing my terapeak subscription.

PCGS CoinFacts is great but costs so......eBay and Heritage completed listings for free are hard to beat.

As a rule I treat sites like Numismedia or publications like Coin World as listing MAXIMUM prices. I always strive to beat those listings. But the older/rarer a coin is the less likely listings like those are accurate. As others have said auction results (Heritage, Stack's, ebay, etc.) are the most realistic.

Thanks, that gives me a few more places to look. I'll check out the other auction places. Kanga I also treat PCGS and NGC price guides as high retail. It's funny with those two site. Sometimes I see the price they list for a coin is actually lower than what I see they sell for. But for the most part they are too high. I'll check out Numismedia against the two. Never heard of terapeak, I'll check it out too. Thanks again

I subscribe to the Grey Sheet and would be happy to help on a specific coin. Denomination, date and grade needed. I use the formula: Ask price plus 10% to buy. Suitable for all but the most common coins.

SsupperDdave........... Quote: This. Full stop. A coin is worth what people are paying for it today, not what somebody publishes as a "guide." May I please step in here..... agreed 1000% AND ... every coin is unique ever buyer is unique ever seller is unique to add to the pot, many sales are subject to the ECON of both the buyer and the seller at THAT moment in time. In other words ... if either the buyer or seller could have a DO OVER the print price might be VERY differant. Red Book? Gray sheet? NGC? PCGS? etc.? I think that is why they call 'em GUIDES Real merchants hang it out for sale ... if it doesn't sell ... mark it down --- and move on.

Spud, there is no 'best' place. Trading in coins requires much research. Examine many places and form a consensus for yourself. IF there were a best place to buy and sell, then the CCF would not have much reason to exist. Neither is there a best place to research varieties. No best place for anything related to coins.
Euclid is said to have replied to King Ptolemy's request for an easier way of learning mathematics that "there is no Royal Road to geometry," following Proclus.[7] There is no royal road to being a knowledgeable coin collector. Sorry.

Well said and lots of good advise! If you collect coins, this forum is by far the best place to hang out. Never had I met a better, nice, well inform group of people interested in the same thing. :)

And for the true collector, price to pay is determined on budget combined with desire IMO

Combine multiple sources to come to an accurate price. Look at recent years and when comparing grades make sure coins are from same grading company. A 65 in NGC might bring less than PCGS 65. Just compare multiple sources and compile an average
