I was perusing ebay listings to see if I could fill some holes in my ASE collection for reasonable prices, and came across this guy. What happened to it? The filp is in as bad of shape as the coin itself so it has not had an easy life.

I know ASE toners can be gorgeous and valuable, and while I still appreciate this one even in the rough shape it's in (and I'd gladly stack it in the safe with my other less-than-pristine ASEs), I wouldn't pay $5 over spot for it.

Ah ebay. If nothing else, a good learning/training tool.

That is one butt ugly ASE... the "superficial markings that can easily be removed" on the "In God We Trust" looking like they pit right into the coin....

Not your normal toning....

I had a 1995 that I pulled from circulation that was just as ugly. My LCS dipped it for me, and it came out beautifully. Still not as nice as a new tone-free ASE, but eh. Ended up trading it for a nice pretty 2012.

Looks like the plastic in the 2x2 got breached (holes) PLUS it was stored in a bad environment.
It is now a TRUE bullion piece.

The 2x2 title says it all: "1986 U.S. DOL." Who ever owned the coin did not value it as pure silver bullion, rather it was treated like cupronickel dollar.

What a shame.
