Last month I shared the beautiful 1857 Flying Eagle cent I recently acquired. https://goccf.com/t/170158&SearchTe...g,Eagle,CentI've noticed that the T in CENT has a distinct missing part to it on the left side of the upright part of the T. It doesn't appear to be a bag mark on the T, but the coin was struck like this. Is this a die variety for the 1857 or just a striking issue? Thanks for any help with this. Paul Bulgerin

That's interesting...it doesn't look like a piece fell out of the coin or it is damage. Perhaps it was on the die, possibly due to a damaged hub? I looked through a bunch of MS FEs and didn't find a match. But I don't have the Snow guides for the FE cents...maybe there's mention of it?

There is no mention of it in Snow's attribution guide. If it was a striking issue or damaged hub, you would think that it would show up on other FE.

There are some IHCs with known die breaks like this, the most widely knows is the 1882 "broken 2" which has the upper part of the 2 missing similar to this. Definitley interesting.

This makes you wonder. Letters and devices on a die are negatives; something like this would require "added" rather than "subtracted" for formerly-empty space to be filled. That, or it's a hub-level feature like 3CN's where stuff simply breaks off the hub.

If Snow doesn't mention it then it's mostly likely an aberration. BUT There are always other possibilities: -- Snow saw it but decided it belongs in the flyspeck category -- Snow didn't see it
If #2 then the requirement would be to find several other with the same anomaly.

I am planning to submit this coin to either PCGS or NGC for grading.
I've never submitted a coin so can I inquire about the T when I submit the coin to see what they might say?

You could, but Snow is the guy who designates these things. The TPG's follow his lead with IGC varieties.

Quote: I've never submitted a coin so can I inquire about the T when I submit the coin to see what they might say? You might first send it to Rick Snow, the recognized autnority on FE and IHC varieties. For far less $--$4--he will attribute the coin for you. I've posted details in this thread.

Thank you for the link. That's quite the website he has! I will email him about the coin.

I'd say it's a hub issue. Very small.
