I have been collecting pennies for 40 years. I have had more than 2 million in my collection at any given time & have or seen just about every error there is, but this is one of two that take the cake!

This Canadian Penny is double struck with two dates! There is a complete upside down & backwards 1971 with a faint 1965 on an angle going up from the beginning of Canada.

It appears as if this coin has been double struck with 2 dates as a result of a possible Die Deterioration that exposed a second date? Any thoughts? (PS I'm having difficulties adding pics but trying to get more up)

I can only picture 3 possibilities myself -

1. They used the wrong hub and stamped it with the right hub over it.

2. Someone picked up an old test coin, or a penny and used it as a test coin?

3. Someone used an off center coin and hammered the other coin on top?

Curious coin, perhaps someone else would have a better guess, or knowledge.

They all seem like valid suggestions Xanonite...DBM I am the biggest skeptic, but this is the first time I came to the community for thoughts, because it does appear to be a legitimate obv on obv clash/restamp as the identical obverse side is re stamped completely upside down and backwards...the 1965 threw me off...an auction company is looking at it now, but I'd like more opinions...but I put nothing past anyone lol I'm looking to confirm or rule out every possibility :)

Overstruck/doublestruck would not be upside down and backwards.

Which auction company?

Thanks for the input. Not ebay (too funny haha), but I'll post the findings. Whether man made or machine made. Have a great day!

Gut feeling in the first place says to be cynical.

This is always the best start point. The buyer protects himself by so doing. The other way is to buy it dirt cheap, on spec., then go through the process indicated below:

The good news comes if it does, by having two or more independent expert third party opinions corroborating each other.

Indeed sounds like a man made coin.
I have a 1940 over a 1947. The coin was placed reverse to reverse. The give away is the flattend obverse on the other side.
I paid 1 dollar for it just for a laugh.
