Okay, I am new to this (or any other) coin site and I am sure I am about to be called a lair or con man or something else. I assure you that I am being honest and looking for guidance! About one year ago at a USPS auction,I bought a "LOT" of coins, in this lot were coins of all types (gold, silver, foreign, old and new. When you bid on these lot's, you only see the coins displayed not the coins under the stacks. After purchasing this lot, I found a 1804 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar. After much research, I now understand that odds are high it isa fake, however, it is not stamped "COPY". I am not wealthy, I am comfortable and do not necessarily need to sell this coin. I am curious how I should go about validating this coin as real or fake. I am not to keen on sending if off to get validated as things get lost sometimes (after all, that's how I came to own it).
Any ideas out there.
Jason

to CCF! You do understand how rare this coin is if it is real right?

Unfortunately, your chances of it being real are pretty much zero but if you post some pictures, we can tell you why it is a fake. The vast majority of Asian counterfeits do not adhere to the Hobby Protection Act requirement that reproductions be conspicuously stamped COPY. Also, what is a "USPS auction"?

Posting pictures would be the first step to eliminate it if its an obvious fake. If at that point it still looks real its absolutely has to go to get graded at that point considering what it is

Pictures will instantly confirm it's authenticity. For every genuine coin, there are 10 million fakes..they don't need to say COPY. Chinese origin.

Quote: After much research, I now understand that odds are high it isa fake, however, it is not stamped "COPY". The odds are abysmally low that it is real. Exponentially. Squared. They are not zero. But they are mighty, mighty close. And then divide that by a very large number. But not a googleplex. Nonetheless I hope for your sake it is real! Best Regards, George

" I am sure I am about to be called a lair or con man or something else." Not here, that's not how we play. Besides, I doubt anyone here doesn't believe you found this item. Where our doubt is on if it's real. threads like this one pop up occasionally. Welcome to the site. what else was in the lot? personally id be a little worried about some of the others possibly not being real too.

I have an 1804 silver dollar! It is a fake. I have never seen a real one. The fake is the only way that I am likely to have such a coin represented in my collection.

A few people have asked what else was in the lot... Several hundred Silver Rounds (basically worth spot price) Several Gold coins (all have been sold and were real) Many older silver dollars (from the late 1800's to the early 1900's) A little bit of old paper money (nothing spectacular) About 50 lbs (not a joke) in Copper Bars A bunch of (400 or so) current Silver Dollars A bunch of early Silver Fifty cent pieces (maybe 300 of them) More old pennies than I could or would ever care to count Some Foreign coins (not many...2 dozen or so) Some Nickles and Dimes and very few Quarters.
I will take a picture of the 1804 Silver Dollar and post it for comments!
Thanks for all the feedback!

When you said you bought a "LOT" of coins you had dual meaning in the word including many.

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like you got a really good deal. I'm not sure what you mean by USPS auction, is it items that have fallen out in the mail or is it items that were undeliverable? Please post some pictures when you have time of the 1804. If you post dates of the older dollars and the early silver halves, you may have something rare in that bit as well.

The other quick check you can do is to weigh it. It should weigh 26.96 grams or very close to that (1-2% less due to wear would not be abnormal). This won't confirm it is real, but if the weight is off more than about 1/2 a gram, it,is almost certainly fake.
