I came across this 1920 Standing Liberty quarter.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1920-Standi...em1c3788540b

I'm still working to detect cleaned coins and have several questions about this one.

Does the obverse toning look original?

The seller says he believes the lines on the obverse are from being stored in an album. They all appear to go the same direction and there don't appear to be similar lines on the reverse. Do these look like lines from an album or are they from circulation?

Thanks for helping me learn.

A very nice coin. The hairlines look more like the coin was stored in a folder. I say this because the toning is solely on the obverse. This toning looks like what you commonly see on coins stored in the house of a smoker. As the toning only affected the obverse, it leads me to think folder, not album. Which would explain why it is hairlined like that. Nothing protecting the obverse from the other parts of the folder when it got folded and moved around.

The price being asked is FRV of an MS63 coin. Not terribly unfair I think, but certainly not anywhere near a deal.

I would not think it is from a sliding insert. That would only hit the high points on the coin. Some of the lines hit more recessed elements, especially between the stars on the left. I am thinking perhaps it was in a folder and was wiped with something that made the hairlines.

It also looks like a little wear on liberty's right knee and the center of the shield. I might think high AU on this.

Pretty coin though

It looks cleaned to me, and the reverse luster doesn't look right

Too much flatness on the shin and up on the obverse. Definite whack on the obverse. The reverse is too many scratches as well.

Thinking positive...this was collected, but by a novice collector.

Thinking the other side....this is an AU coin. Probably at AU55.

There is definite wear on the knee and the horizontal hairlines are distracting enough to get a "cleaned" designation from a grading service IMO. On the plus side, the toning is not obviously artificial and the coin appears to qualify as Full Head.

If you like the look the coin might be worth $200 or so but the asking price is too high. Doesn't mean someone won't pay it!
Rest in Peace

I think the coin has been dipped, which aided in creating the toning. that said, it is very attractive and would look great in a type set. Still the asking price is way too high. I bought a similar nicely toned near MS 1920 slq for under $50.
