I had a counterfeit on my watch list that ended tonight.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MEXICO-1831...251466525937

I have a few of this type in my collection and my bid limit was $35.

I wonder who # 250 is? Anyone know him/her?

R****s (250) might be a shill bidder. That number shows up in his previous sales. Weird that the high bidder made sure they were going to win it with that many bids on top of each other.

A shill bid that high makes no sense. The real two star variety is worth no where near that.

Where do you see that? Look at the monthly bidding stats: 74 total bids, 10% with this seller... in the form of those (8) bids made on this single piece.

Bidder has bid exclusively on other Mexican pieces over the last month - including... 27 bids on one item. Simply some combo of being a really dumb bidder and having a really boring life, I would suspect.

In digging around some, it would seem the buyer may be the user who has offered the same lots of Cap & Rays over and over again in recent months at unrealistic prices. Everyone's a wheeler-dealer...

Nevertheless, including that bidder, you had (3) separate bidders of at least $150. Did none of them recognize what this is, or were they actually bidding that high KNOWING it was a contemporary counterfeit?

realswatcher Three bidders above $150 is indeed odd.

Having collected counterfeits for over 50 years - I think I understand the rarity of these coins and even knowing that I think $150 is still high.

This particular counterfeit 2 star version is about as available as the real thing (comparable rarity) - so if counterfeits were considered equally collectable (equal demand) then an equal price could be envisioned. So unless for some reason counterfeits become more desirable than genuine coins - the value of an original seems to be a limiting factor.

I would love to talk to the second and third bidders - I could accommodate their bids.
