So I found this beauty in a pile of old bank rolls that were collecting dust in my attic. I sent it in to get graded and tada, probably the best CRH find I'll ever have. Any other good finds out there? I'm sure there are some other lucky ones Edited by small_fortune_ 03/09/2014 7:09 pm

Found a holed flying eagle and a badly scratched up G-4 Seated dime once. Never had quite the luck you did.

Interesting find. I'm proposing a scenario for how it happened. An unscrupulous bank employee stuffed it into a roll with the intent of taking it home and them lost track of it. Sound reasonable?

In the 50's and early 60's a great many people who had gold coins that had not been turned back into the government in 1933 were actually under the mistaken impression that the gold coins were illegal to possess and that they could go to jail if they were caught with them. So they would try to get rid of them by slipping them into rolls or using them in vending machines. A man I knew back in Louisville had a vending machine route back during that period and he would frequently get half eagles and quarter eagles that people were using in the machines as nickels and dimes.

Incredible find! The best I ever had was during the late 80's of finding a 1885 IHC in a penny roll which grade MS-64 BN by NGC, I think I can't ever break that record.

Amazing find! My best is a 1936 Walker half.
Interestingly, this isn't the first time I've heard of someone finding gold in a roll. I could understand people trying to cut their losses back in the 40s/50s/60s when investment gold was still illegal to own (although coins were exempt as Conder pointed out) but I would think that all gold would have been found long ago, especially when gold became legal again.
Speaking of people trying to cheat banks and vending machines, I heard a long time ago of a customer who spent a dime roll filled with 3 cent pieces, thinking they were making a $3.50 profit. People will try absolutely anything.

My best CRH'ing find was a 1917 DDO that I sent out to PCGS for grading. It shot a F15. Still have it in the SDB after 10 years since the find.

Wow Small Fortune;
That was a find of a lifetime for sure dude! What mad you decide to go through the old rolls in your attic at that time? Or did you just spontaneously go up there and do it to get the task over with one day? I bet you almost fainted. I probably would have! LOL...
