On somewhat of a whim I decided to purchase my first ancient coin today and I went with something Roman...

Claudius-II-Gothicus-Coin?

Claudius-II-Gothicus-Coin?

Claudius-II-Gothicus-Coin?

Claudius-II-Gothicus-Coin?

I think Claudius II Gothicus is pictured obverse and I'm also pretty sure it's silver or a proximity (I've read that the coinage quality was debased). So, I'm wondering what the forum can tell me about this coin...if I'm correct thus far and any other info that can be provided?

Specifically, I haven't been able to match the reverse to anything I've looked at online but have found very similar matches to the obverse and am somewhat confused. Also I don't understand the denominations just yet.

Hi epictetus,

first of all, a nice coin!

You're right, its a Claudius II Gothicus from Cyzicus Mint.(Salus st. rifght feeding snake) SPQR in exergue)

RIC 242var / RIC temp n°858

Here you find this type:
http://www.ric.mom.fr/fr/coin/858

These coins from the eastern mints have often a relatively strong silvering.
Comparing with the mints of Rome and Milan for example, they have often no, or just a hint of silvering.

Regards,
Simon

It is a very nice coin that has been IDed, so I can't really add much to that other than it's not often to find these Claudius II coins with much of the silver wash still remaining. Congrats on a nice find.

Coins with the SPQR in exergue make for a fun little series to collect.

Very good for the first. A non standard style for Claudius, well struck, good metal and hardly any wear or corrosion. The SPQR is a great kicker too, especially when its written that finely.
