Hello,

I first need to state that an associate called to inform me that she had just found a 1971-D Kennedy half dollar(KHD) which did not have the letters 'FG' under eagle's left leg on the reverse.

It has been somewhat difficult finding out any population or retail pricing on a KHD like this one.

I have read various opinions out there depending upon the year of the KHD that imply that the absence of the 'FG' makes a KHD more valuable while others state that the lack of 'FG' is nothing more than the result of a grease-filled die adding no additional value.

As soon as the coin arrives I will post a photo but in the meantime could folks give their opinions on what this particular 1971-D KHD - no 'FG' might be worth.

Also please tell me which other KHDs without the 'FG' may be valuable and worth the time to search for. Expected retail pricing on these other KHD no-'FG' varieties would also be nice to have as a reference.

Thanks,

mdpmedia

I guess whatever one will pay for it.
Just die wear/debris. No hub/die was ever made without
the FG initials. Falls in line with the 22 plain lincoln
and the 82/83 Roosevelt dimes. For some reason the 22 plain
and the 82 dime bring larger premiums than any other worn/debris filled coin. Why ? no idea. Just history I guess.

The valuable 1982 is actually missing the mintmark punch while less valuable examples with a weak date are the result of a grease-filled die.

As for the Kennedys, I consider it more of an oddity than anything else and I personally do not assign a significant premium to them. Some people will pay a premium for them although that amount could vary widely depending on demand for a particular date/mintmark combo.
