I know... we want pics!

Sorry - I donlt ahve them or the coin. I will try.

Visiting a friend who dabbles in coins. He is in his late 60s. He told me he had an 1829 IHS. He showed it to me. It is not 1829. Instead what he is calling a 2 looks like a backwards 6.

The lighting was not good, and the loop he gave me was OK. But it just looked like an 1869 where the 6 was backwards.

I believe I have a good handle on altered/fakes, but again, the lighting was not the best.

Is there a legit error known like this (I cannot find it online), or is there a counterfeit known from this era? It was given to him as the same time as a couple other coins from the same era.

I will have to get back with him and see if I can borrow it to take some pics. Maybe in better lighting I will be able to tell.

Could it be an 1859 with a closed loop?

No - this was a very well defined backwards 6 - not even close to the looks of the 5 in 1859 (googled for a pic of one). The cent was not in the best condition as far as details go, but the numbers of the dates looked pretty decent. Again - lighting may show otherwise. I just wanted to see if I was somehow missing seeing a known error online.

Thanks - was just wondering if there was an error IHS specialists would know about. I will try to get pics, but will likely be awhile until I can. I do not see this guy very often.

A legitimate error such as described is not possible.
