I kind of have a little issue. I received a large lot of coins. Any how most of them are error or variety style coins with a few that are unc. or proof coins. Here is the issue at hand I collect mostly silver coins and only collect by using the Red Book. I had no idea of all the different varieties until I got all these coins and its blowing my mind. On some of these coins I can find the errors and varieties (cuds, DDO, DDR, die cracks, and what not) and on others I have no idea.(some of these might have like 5.0 on nickels which I am guessing is some weight. Any how is there a general idea of what things are worth with minor issues? He wrote things on maybe 1/4 of the card holders but I still cant figure them out. Are there some errors that are not visible to the naked eye and the ones that are not are they worth much? I hope this didn't confuse you guys but my brain is officially blown.

Try posting pics of the ones you find troubling. There are those here who live for this type of sleuthing. I betcha wont be in the dark for long.

Like this one I see what the error is but does it really add value to the coin ?

I do not see anything but die wear on the quarter but that might be due to photo quality. The photo of the mint mark on the cent needs to be closer for good diagnosis. When taking coin photos it is best to remove them from the holder.

To answer your question about the value....it varies tremendously. There's no way to tell without looking at each one carefully. And we're happy to do it. The 1974S is, I think, the small date variety for that year, the four and the MM look right for that.

Sorry I will keep looking for that one but I put it in the pile of hundreds of quarters so until then here is another coin. This one states Cud Error on holder. I took this one out but should I worry about removing these from holders at all ? Thanks Again

Yes, sometimes the error far over comes the pure numismatic value of the coin itself. When I get new stuff ... first thing I look for is ERRORS. Easy to spot (most of the time) We want more pics.

So is this last quarter a keeper or a dumper ? Is it actually a Cud coin ? Are my pictures getting good enough we can judge what this last coin is ? I apologize I really don't have the stuff to post high end pictures. I am just using a loop and my phone. Please bear with me.

Go very slow with your little gold mine. Nice thing about errors is there is way less of a "fixed value." Mostly, I personally would not pay to slab them. If you desire to sell ... it is somewhat of a sellers market ... if time is on your side. Each Cud (or Error) is different than another. Hope to see morepics of yours.

That is indeed a Cud on that quarter. It is most definitely a keeper, and worth a nice premium. Congrats!

" This one states Cud Error on holder. I took this one out but should I worry about removing these from holders at all ?" In most cases, no. Unless the error is not obvious. Anyone who collects coins and knows what a ' Cud' is will recognize it as such. As for slabbing, yesterday I had the chance to see a few error coins from a dealers personal collection which were in slabs. But they are valued in the thousands of dollars. In short, no need for worry. Indeed, enjoy the quest for knowledge and understanding, but I also agree that you should proceed slowly and deliberately.

WildWings............ May I please get you started off on the right foot on CCF? I really have poor eyes ... Maybe you have a thumb on your Cud Quarter in your pic. You are a newbie. Best to show pics with your gloves on ... or the coins on a flat surface. The oils in your fingers is a no-no. Causes problems with your coins. We are only the (current) owners-keepers of the coins. I learned that here on CCF ... from the finest MODS anywhere.

Thanks guys that's what I thought I was even nervous taking them out of the holders. Any how I thank you guys for the feed back. I am learning a ton in less then 1 week. I think the biggest thing I have been reading is its not a penny but rather a cent ;) Over all I think I will just start posting a few coins at a time and see where this goes. Thanks Again
