I took some Mint sets to a dealer and wanted to know about "no S" coins in proofs/mint sets. He said coins from Philadelphia had no mint mark. How do I know if my nickel has "no s" or just no mint mark because it was me in Philadelphia?. I am confused. It is in a pack with a 1971 S penny, a penny with no mark, and some other coins. I sold him another set of another year with a Roosevelt dime with "no S" that I thought was valuable but he said the same thing about that. This one came in sealed envelope that says "UC" on it. I don't have a magnifying glass and I will get one tomorrow. Be gentle with me please if I did this wrong. I have never used forums and I'm not a collector. Thank you. Carole

The No-S coins will only be found in Proof Sets(hard plastic case, one of each denomination), you have doft pliofilm Mint Sets that contain uncirculated business strike coins from all three Mints. Generally, all modern S coins will be proofs but San Francisco also produced circulating cents 1968-1974 and nickels 1968-1970 along with SBA dollars 1979-1981.

Proof coins are struck twice and usually have very square rims. They tend to be much better struck and rarely have much marking. Some of the finest Uncs look a little proof and unscrupous people used to sometimes substitute them into proof sets but you can tell the difference if you look closely and have a little experience.

No confusion please ... all is well.

Appears that you have 'mint sets' .. which are USA packaged examples of the circulating coins for the year.

Finding examples within a mint set without a mint mark is expected ... that is how they were packaged from the US Mint.

The rare (and valuable) coins are USA Proof Sets that very rarely left the "S" mint mark off the coin.

You are good ... and your dealer is telling you the truth.
