Can stay up for all I care - If anyone wants to drop $200 on it without knowing what they're looking at, congrats to them. Plus, I might say something "smart" to the seller...

Assuming I researched/know my styles well enough, I have noticed alterations (creating) a few rare 1860s 8R that have popped up in recent months on the Bay. Again, assuming I'm correct, this includes (2) different types of the same date - one slabbed NGC, the other PCGS.

Gotta do you research on rare (or in this instance, fictional) dates like this...

The thing is, an 1864 Ca isn't that big a deal in and of itself. It does looks like "good" work in that the "6" isn't simply a modified "8" and has been admirably reintegrated into the coin from a patina standpoint, but I guess all that effort is "justified" in making a $200 coin out of, what, a $50 one? The TPG's, even the top ones, seem to know about squat on these, it wouldn't be the first time they've certified an altered 8R, or even total counterfeits. I can barely make out the "dragon's teeth" under the Phrygian cap, a definitive diagnostic which exposes it as actually no earlier a coin than 1868.

Yeah, the dragon's teeth are there... and looking closely, I think I see a shadow of the removed "8" (though like you said, it's pretty good work).

A 1864 Ca (legit), indeed, is nothing amazing (though def. a tougher date/mm), but a 1864 Ca MM would be an unknown mint/assayer... exactly what the seller is hyping it as.
