I know it sounds like a stupid question. Have a possibly valuable raw Lincoln Cent and it has some dust and a piece of spider web on it. I want to send it out to a TPG, but also would like to make sure the dust, etc. is gone. Don't want to take any risk on damaging the coin. My only thought was compressed air? Don't have a compressor, was thinking of the cans of air you can buy. Suggestions please. Thanks. Ed

Use the same compressed air as is used to blow dust off of a computer and I think that
you will be fine.

Use a rubber squeeze bulb that they use on camera lens or a dip in PURE acetone.

Just blow on it or rinse in distilled water

I'd be hesitant to simply blow on it with my mouth. I wouldn't want the moisture or tiny spit particle hitting the coin valuable coin. I'd think a quick acetone dip would be good.

You don't want to use acetone unless you really have something otherwise unremovable on the coin. Acetone is overkill for dust and spider web. If you dip it in anything at all, make it xylene which has zero risk of discoloring your coin. If it goes through the sniffer at the TPG they will pick up the acetone.

I was hoping to avoid wetting it in any way. I have successfully used pure acetone on coins in the past, but in this case using air seems the best choice so far. I really appreciate all the suggestions.

Why not just send it in as is? I would think most TPGS's would take that stuff off at no extra cost.
However, here are some other suggestions:
1. Hold in your hand and hold it outside a moving car window. At about 100 m/hour all the stuff on that coin should vanish.
2. Get in your shower at home and hold the coin while taking a shower.
3. Go to a gas station and use their tire inflator equipment.
4. Carefully wrap that coin and send to me. No I will not fix the problem and send it back to you.
5. I still say just send as is to a TPGS.
If they should give you a grade on the dust, hopefully they will not charge for that.

Just rinse it off with either distilled water, acetone or xylene. I rinse EVERY coin I submit. NONE of the TPGs will do anything for you. They take coins "as-is" and slab them unless you request and pay extra for conservation services.

He mentioned it is only dust. Unless he is way off on what is on the coins, almost sounds like he could just blow on them.

Here's a photo. I just won the auction. Will probably submit it to PCGS as soon as I receive it. You can probably see the dust, hair, and what looks like a piece of spider web hanging from the Y in Liberty to Lincoln's shoulder. I'm totally unsure of what I should do to it before I send it in. Now that I have posted the photos, could you please make some suggestions again. Thanks. Ed.
