Hi all,

My wife brought home two coins from a friend at work and was hoping I could help identify them for her son. I'm more of a US collector so I don't even know where to start with these two. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

The one on the left looks like a HSUAN-T'UNG 1 Cash from the Board of Revenue Mint. http://www.calgarycoin.com/referenc...hsuan%20tung

I maybe wrong but It looks machine struck to me, instead of cast. So it maybe a reproduction or a charm.

The second one looks like a SHAN-LUNG (KAO TSUNG) 1 Cash from Board of Revenue Mint. (http://www.calgarycoin.com/referenc...hien%20lung) But your picture is so dark I am having a hard time reading the kanji. It also looks like it was struck by machine, meaning it is a reproduction or a charm.

With better pictures my opinion is subject to change, but I'm leaning towards modern reproductions.

Sadly, allranger is correct in his speculations. These are machine-struck replicas of Chinese "cash" coins. Despite the fact that genuine cash coins are fairly cheap and can be bought in bulk fairly easily, replicas of them continue to be made, and these particular replicas has the distinctive swept-back "Board of Revenue" mintmark on the reverse. Such objects are frequently made for Chinese traditional ritual purposes - think "Feng Shui", if it helps you to imagine what that might mean.

The correct orientation of the coins:

Chinese coins are usually in medal alignment.
