Here is my first shot at cleaning a coin with acetone. Let me know what you think. I don't ever really plan on cleaning anything worth some money, probably just junk coins, just been wanting to give this a try.

It's generally not a good idea to dip coins unless they are mint state and have luster, otherwise they end up looking really dull and washed out. As far as the coin you posted, you could have had the same result using an alcohol pad.

This is not a "dip;" this is acetone, an organic solvent chemically incapable of reacting with silver. "Dip" is an acid which physically strips a layer of metal from a coin. In this case, I think the OP was looking to ameliorate the greenish stuff around the date - if that was the actual case, the job is as yet incomplete.

What was your original motivation, OP?

The black spots and the "gunk" on the reverse around the eagles right wing. I don't know what the dark stuff around the date is but it is not coming off with acetone.

If you would use an alcohol pad - don't rub the coin.

I do not know how long you left the coin in the acetone. I have been using acetone now for about two years and used it to take the gunk off of many, many coins. I have never had a problem or a mark left on a coin by leaving it in acetone for even 24 hours (forgot about it being there). But since it cannot react with the metal of the coin, this makes a lot of sense to me.

I would be surprised if a longer soak did not get rid of the stuff on the REV rim and around the date. I have gotten rid of a lot of similar looking gunk with longer soaks.
