Seeing the recent thread about an 1877 IHC made me think about this one in my collection.

What do you think - is it genuine?

It has the shallow N which I understand is one of the diagnostics.

Based upon the weakness in the two "Ns" [reverse] I'd say legit.
While not my area I do know that the 1877 has this as a marker.
Looking good so far.
The 'shallowness' often extends to the lower "N" in the upper left corner.
The date looks fine.

I think it looks OK - the date looked a little funny at first but the 7's are right. there is a closeup of the date on mine. Looks like a nice coin!

I believe your coin is genuine. The date looks right and as you pointed it has the weak 'N' reverse. There are only 2 die pairs for the 1877 and while it is difficult to tell for sure because your coin is worn I believe it is die pair #1

Thank you Matthew, paddy and happy hop for your comments and opinions.
The reason I was asking is because I bought this coin at a coin show in Belgium, and you never know. It was very reasonably priced as well.

GERMANICVS,
A discussion of a counterfeit 1877 can be found here:

It helped me with learning the date characteristics.

i believe it is real too. However, since it was bought in Europe, I'd take its weight just to be sure.

Thank you all for your input. It is very much appreciated.
I shall be sure to weigh it - should have thought about that first.
