I attended the Chicago International Coin Fair today and went to the NGC booth there to submit my first coins for grading. The woman at the booth helped me through all the paperwork in getting my membership and filling out the submission forms. I've thought of submitting a few coins for a long time and thought this might be a helpful way to get a first order in without the fear of messing up the paperwork. I submitted two nice 1857 Flying Eagle cents, a beautifully toned 1884 Seated Liberty dime and two red BU British half pennies; an 1862 and 1890. I was told that the turn around was thirteen business days. Paul Bulgerin

Very interested in following how this turns out. What was the membership fee and did they give you any free submissions?

The membership fee was $125.00 and came with five free submissions which I used.

Its always the better deal from PCGS and NGC to get the free submissions with the membership and use them on "classic" tier coins

Let us know how you make out when you get the coins back, with pictures of course! Good luck!

Is there any reason you chose NGC over ANACS or PCGS? This is just a question I like to ask different people when they submit.

Quote: Is there any reason you chose NGC over ANACS or PCGS? This is just a question I like to ask different people when they submit. Speaking ONLY for myself. No to ANACS because I do NGC registry sets and ANACS graded coins are not accepted. Yes to NGC because I'm an ANA member and therefore don't have to pay the membership fee to submit coins to them. No to PCGS because I do have to pay the membership fee to submit coins to them.

Just so you know with PCGS and NGC the membership fee really. Is a misconception. Its true there is an upfront fee for both, but both have options where if you get the membership with the grading vouchers you end up saving money on grading and getting the membership free. For PCGS the 199 member ship gets you 8 submission vouchers which is you use them on the classic coin tier are worth 32 dollars each. You can get even more bang for the buck doing the secure plus service which is like 45 a coin but either one you get those 8 coins graded at a discount rate which makes the membership free. NGC I believe is something like 5 coin vouchers for 149. With the ANA its not necessary for NGC but there is some savings still there that could be worth considering

I used NGC because they were the service that had a table at the Chicago show. The original information for the show said that PCGS was going to be there and so I was prepared to submit the coins to them, but since they were not actually there I went with NGC.
From what I've read both companies appear to be pretty similar with regard to quality and consistency of grading. I know individual collectors will have differences of opinion and personal preferences, but I wanted to get these coins graded and wanted help with the process, so I went with who was there.

I just checked on my order. My coins have been graded and are now receiving their final quality control inspection before being shipped back to me. I'm anxious to see how my five little lovelies did.

I guess you can't find out the grades until you actually receive them?

I think I can check on the grades once they're complete and ready to ship, but I'd rather stretch out the suspense and wait until I get them back.

I got my coins back today with some mixed results. The biggest bummer was the gorgeous 1857 Flying Eagle cent came back as "Not Genuine". That was a shock! I've posted a link on this one under "Classic Coins". https://goccf.com/t/176962Fortunately, I contacted the seller and he is willingly refunding my money even if it's been nearly three months since I won the coin. He's an honest man. My other 1857 Flying Eagle pleased me with an MS-63 grade. I bought it for $122 as a "Brown AU" a year ago. That turned out to be a great deal. The two Victoria Half Pennies (1862 and 1890) both came back as MS-65 RB. I'd hoped the 1862 might go MS-66 since it's the prettiest coin in my collection, but I'm happy with both coins. Finally, the 1884 Seated Liberty dime was graded "Uncirculated Details" and "Improperly Cleaned". I thought that was a possibility, but had my fingers crossed. It has nice luster and pretty toning. Photos will follow in the next couple of days.
