1652 Mass. Pine Tree Shilling - Noe Variety 10. Apologies for the sub-par photos. Any ideas as to grade? In terms of preservation, does it make sense to send this to a TPG? Thanks.

Has it been authenticated before?
If not then yes. Many fakes out there.

To the best of my knowledge it has not been authenticated before. The Coin belonged to my Grandfather. It was sitting in a safe since 1977 (along with others). I'm very new to all of this and still learning about which coins to send to TPG.

It is hard to tell from the photo, either High AU or MS

I would recommend that you get this coin authenticated by an expert in the series or a third party grader. These coins have been counterfeited for many years. From your pictures, it looks to be in either AU or a lower MS grade and if it is authentic, an exceptional coin. Thanks for sharing it.

Sure looks like a Noe-10. Could we get a weight?

Unfortunately I do not have a small scale. From all of the comments, I believe it justifies the price to send to a TPG for authentication / grading / preservation. I will post back here in a few weeks once I have received the coin back. Thank you everybody for the helpful comments.

My gut feeling is that your coin is a copy. I hope to be proven wrong.

The coin has been packaged and will be sent to PCGS in the morning. If nothing else, it is a relatively small price to find out if it is a real 350+ year old coin. Either way, I will post results here once I find out.

I've never graded these, so can't say for sure... looks in AU state.
