Tough coin to grade. The obverse looks MS. Weakly struck reverse?

I agree that it is a tough coin to grade. The disparity in grading for each side is huge. I feel that to be truthfully accurate, I am compelled to give it a split grade: AU53 / VF35. Flying Eagle cents seem to also have wide variation in striking detail. Normally one would reason that the striking pressure must have been varied throughout the life of it's production, to produce the variability in detail seen in a batch of them with the same amount of wear. It that is indeed the case, the next step in my reasoning suggests that the Mint was using an innovative new alloy at the time, and they were still developing the technology for it's use s a coinage metal, and that includes a variation in striking pressure.

I would grade this AU-58, with a weak strike in the middle of the reverse.

I'm glad the consensus is in line with my grading. I had it at AU53-55, but that's with pretty much no knowledge about this series. I've never had any interest in flying eagles, but I liked the look of this one.

fortunately for you, the reverse was weakly struck and not the obverse.
