It's nice even with the old cleaning but $495 seems a bit steep for it.

Not bad. The cleaning doesn't detract from the eye appeal and it must be a light wipe because I don't see any surface issues. Yet, the coin is still cleaned so $495 is a bit high. Just message him an offer, perhaps $400?

After viewing the other coins he has to sell(most being over price or problem coins)I would pass.

It's a keeper, even if cleaned, and nowhere near R2 in such a grade. Heritage hasn't offered one in AU or better since 2007. Yeah, overpriced, but I kind of like it to appreciate in the long term.
I wouldn't bite at $495 but at $400 I'd be all over it.

with SsuperDdave. This coin is really nice. I do see a cleaning but the off-center obverse strike and the details are nice. Good luck! (If you don't want it, I may consider it, but it's yours 'til then!! Let me know on CCF email if you're going to pass on it!)

This seller is about 20 miles from me. I can go pick it up for you but then you'd never see it

Considering the FRV is 650 on an AU50 and what "cleaning" there was has done little to the coin, I dont think it was a bad deal at all. Gorgeous coin. Post pics when you get her in hand.

If YOU like it buy it (which you did)
I'm sure everyone has overpaid (not saying you did as I am not a CBH expert) for a coin they have been looking for for 2 years because it was the only example that came up for sale.

Is it the grade that makes the O-112 worth more or something else I might not know about?

Grade and hopefully it looks as good in hand as in the pics.
I would have regretted passing on it. It remains to be seen how I did. I'll post photos when I get it.

Yes, it's the grade. It's a Condition Rarity, very tough in a grade over XF and possibly rarer than the R2 designator might indicate, overall. Of 812 sales of 1817 Halves in the Heritage archive, only 22 are O-112, and only 5 of those AU or better. And remember, Bust Halves have been attributed for so long that very few are sold in a major venue unattributed. In truth, there's no real way to form an accurate opinion of this coin's value - too little history exists for it. The more I contemplate it, the less worried I am about $500 as a price for it. Were I noD, depending on how the coin looks in-hand I'd be seriously considering throwing this one at NCS. If it makes it into a righteous slab at the slam-dunk AU55 technical grade, the first high-end Bust Half Nut Club member to see it would pull $1500 from his wallet so fast your head would spin.

Thanks for the detailed explanation Dave I thought there had to be more to it.
I have a lot to learn about these halves.
