Proposal to tweak with the obverses of all coins, except the Susan B. Anthony dollar (The dollar coin at the time. Maybe they should have done more new Ikes ) and a total redesign of the reverses of the penny, nickel, dime, quarter and half. http://articles.philly.com/1989-07-...r-diane-wolf(I will agree that the Lincoln Memorial looks a lot like a boxcar on the Lincoln Memorial penny) This was way back in 1989, and it seemed to have a huge potential of passing, as from what I read, there were a lot of Congress members who supported it. Does anyone here know why this proposal failed? Edited by Fox 04/15/2014 2:17 pm

Interesting article. Wonder why it didn't happen.

The longer things stay the same, the more resistant to change we become.
This is why we still have cents and one dollar notes. This is why you are having problems getting the half dollar to circulate.

The half did circulate way back before the Kennedy. I think part of the reason why halves stopped circulating was that silver was removed in 1964 from quarters and dimes. Halves continued to have at least 40% silver and people held onto them. By that time, people just got used to not using and didn't start again after 1971 when they were all the way debased. I think whether or not silver was halted in coins, the Kennedy half was kept by many as well as a commemorative. Just my thoughts, but I did live through it as a very young child and saw the silver kept as is stopped being minted. And Kennedy halves kept for memories as well.

You are correct. My point is, the more that time goes by, the more difficult it will be getting people to accept it again.

That's funny, when I was a kid I used to think the LMC obverse was a box car too.

The main driving force behind the idea of design reform was Diane Wolf, member of the Commission of Fine Arts. She left the Commission at the end of 1989 and the push for redesign faltered.

Quote: Well, I did not want to pile on. jbuck, you ALWAYS have the right things to say to cheer me up. (Oh, and did you honestly think I was going to give up my causes so easily. You should not give up either though. But, how do we help the dollar coin circulate, when we have that dog gone $1 bill in the way? )

Interesting. It would have been really neat if it had passed.

We eliminate the one dollar note... and those who support it. <insert evil laugh> And just to be clear, I was kidding. I would never advocate causing bodily harm to those who have opposing views.

I think it'd be nice to tweak the obverses of the cent, dime, quarter, and half to match the forward-facing posture of the nickel, Presidential dollars, and Native American dollars. Same dead presidents, just fresh makeovers with 3/4 or full-on facing. They would engage the viewer. Also, it'd provide some consistency across the coinage.
