In one of my 2013 Limited Edition Silver Proof Sets, this dime looks crushed on the reverse. I was getting used to seeing all the scratched plastic on the front of the case like in the last picture of the obverse but looking at the reverse you can pretty clearly see the error through the plastic case. I carefully took it out to be sure and took some pictures to get some outside opinions... as in, should I send it back to the mint for a replacement or is there any additional value in keeping it?

Is that a pot hole or the item struck through into the coin?

Whatever happened, it created a crater into the coin. It appears to be melted metal at the smudged area.

I personally would keep it because of the anomaly. Does removing it from the case hurt your return option?

Good question. I suppose it doesn't matter if it's worth keeping :)

Worth keeping is in the eye of the beholder. I see why so many state and maybe I should too, "I'm not an expert" on the subject, but I can say I'm an error nut, and it looks messed up to me so I like it for that reason.

Looks like it happened at the time of the strike because the obverse is not affected. The clad layer is still present and not showing copper. A struck through error, but what was struck through may remain a mystery.

It's absolutely worth keeping. In a day and age where MS/PR70DCAM is a reasonable expectation from US Mint products, a blatant strikethrough actually making it out of the building - especially a Proof issue - is a pretty uncommon occurrence. Not of universal appeal, but the right collector will give you a substantial premium for it.

Definitely a strike through error, and it is a large strike through, and on a proof. Yes it's worth a premium. How large a premium I don't know.
