Unless I have no choice. At least not if it's a shipment I really care about. My 1909-S VDB was picked up July 16th by USPS. It's been over a week and still no delivery. No problem, just type the tracking number online right? Wrong. All the tracking number shows is picked up July 16th in Virginia. I call them and they can't even give me an idea. They told me after 2 weeks (this Monday) I can "file a complaint". File a complaint? It's a $2500 coin!  Anyway, just had to E-vent. Cheers everyone. Edited by USArmyParatrooper 07/26/2007 10:22 pm

I don't recall :( BIG mistake not making sure. It was shipped from Liberty Coins, and they're fairly well recognized. I would think they would at least offer it if it wasn't standard, considering they only deal in high dollar items. I shouldn't have just assumed. I'm going to call them tomorrow just to make sure.

DANG! Sure hope you get it soon! I would follow up today. If they shipped it on the 16th, why does their inventory show your coin on their updated inventory of the 19th?

Insurance is NOT the buyer's responsibility. The FTC Mail order laws demand that the seller gets the item to you. Period. Insurance protects the seller, NOT the buyer. By law, the seller has to make good, regardless of who paid for, or if there even was, insurance.

What shipping method did they use? If they shipped registered mail it could take 14-21 days to deliver and if they only used delivery confirmation the online check will only tell you when item was sent or picked up and the date/time it was delivered. I would find out how they shipped and if it was insured before filing a claim based on the USPS online tracking system which is anything but reliable.
Edit to add: Before filing an insurance claim read and understand all of the USPS rules regs. Most USPS employees have no idea of what is and is not eligible for insurance claims(you will get a different response from each employee. Also, try and come with a term other than "coin" when referring to your lost item. In many cases when the item is valued greater than $100 they will tell you it the responsibility of the seller to file the claim since they have possession of the pertinent docs.ie. receipts, tracking ##, and original invoice. If you take on the responsibility of filing the claim print out the online claim form and complete it. (you will have to obtain the pertinent docs.ie. receipts, tracking ##, and original invoice from the seller). Then have your USPS branch manager or PostMaster proof read your claim. Then send claim to St. Louis yourself.

According to Liberty Coins it was shipped registered. And it's coast to coast. So it sounds like I just have a while to wait?

Registered mail is MUCH slower due to the fact it must be signed for every time it changes hands and if not on the road, or in the air, it must be locked up over night. Be patient as it will turn up. Registered is notoriously slow!

I wouldn't worry to much if it registered mail. For some reason, USPS is remarkably competent with that.

as was said about registered it is very slow but you can bet that it will not get lost and if it does they know exactly who to turn to, to get it back because each and everyone that touches it has to sign for it so I think you are pretty safe

Don't really have much to add, but I would like to say that the USPS tracking system online is useless! It almost never updates from the time the seller originally sends the item, I don't understand the point of a tracking number when it doesn't actually track anything!

True, but... That all depends on who is dealing with your claim. It is much less of a hassle to just the label item as "collectible memorabilia" than to try to explain the difference between numismatic value and intrinsic or cash value when dealing with USPS employees.
These opinions are just based on the horrors I witnessed as contract employee for the USPS Postal Investigator's evidence collection/forensic lab.
I am almost certain that USArmy will receive his 09 s VDS in the near future if sent Reg.Mail.

I would be in touch with the seller, in this case, a dealer. They really are responsible to make sure you get the coin, it is their bottom on the line. Let them know you haven't received it etc.
