The other day I made a mistake and purchased another SMS from '66 and '67. This now means that I have more multiple sets than I need. I started purchasing them because I needed the Kennedy's (which I purchased singularly from another source).

So my questions are this:

1. Since there bulk of their value seems to be reside in the Kennedy is there any reason (on my part) that I should keep the sets together?

2. For the non-half dollar coins, is there any value in those coins? They don't seem to have a slot in any album.

3. Is there any special finish on any of these coins that would separate them from a proof, uncirculated, or regular struck coin?

Just wondering because I currently have no need either separate or trade these sets.

To my understanding, coins from those SMS sets have special finish (somewhere btw business strike and proof strike).

Great question! All of the coins in those sets have a dansco slot somewhere all denomination. The most important thing to do is search them for cameo's on all coins. The SMS sets and all coins 1965-1967 have no mint marks and there wasnt alot of effort put forth in there quality comapared to proof coinage,so high grade coins are revered. There is some great literature on this subject. If you have a Cherry Pickers Guide you can search your coins for errors. If you ever look into dansco books. Perhaps the kennedy book #8166 you will find a home for those sets.

The only dansco album that I've seen that has a slot for any of the coins from the sets is the Kennedy album. Nickels and dimes don't have a slot for them.

So numismaticaly speaking then does the only coin that has value seem to the half dollar. I don't know if even the grading agencies have a grading label for them. It is almost as if theses sets are non=entities in the Coin World.

If they are graded at all it would be as MS with no extra notation as to their status as a SMS.

Did I miss something regarding their nature? They do seem to have less collecting following than the current Presidential dollars. Maybe is a couple years though I may be collecting those dollars myself.

I think that the SMS coins are graded SP which means specimen. If you already took the Kennedy halves out. then I would split the sets up.

TPG does have special designations for these SMS set (PCGS and NGC either called them SMS or SP, as mentioned)

PCGS and NGC (I think) used to grade these with the MS prefix but later changed to the SP prefix which means Specimen or Special Strike. The Cameos and Deep Cameos of these coins can command surprisingly high prices.

ghostrider: Assuming that none of the coins will Cameo (very important to check ALL pre 1970 sets for these) or are double dies . . . I would consider sticking these in a local live auction because in my experience when the auctioneer says I have a 1965 (or 66 or 67) Special Mint Set which is actually what their name as I guess the crowd thinks they really are rare or something and they just take off. Percentage of book value they outperform the 1960-1964 Proof Sets and any proof or mint set from 1968-1975.
