Are there any useful websites that give info on US proof sets.

I'd quite like to put together a set, not every single year, but of all of the different variants.

Thanks

I'm not clear what you are asking for... the US puts out proof sets yearly now, has since 1950 (except for 1965-67). What do you mean by variants?

Do you mean proof sets with small dates in them? Or do you mean something else?

I'm looking at the more modern sets, this is what I have at the moment:

1968 (40% Kennedy)
1976 (standard)
1976 (silver)
1984

So I'd like:

A Franklin set
1964 (90% Kennedy)
1 x 1970s (not '76)
1 x SBA set
1 x 1990s set
1 x 2000s set

That sort of thing.

So, a type set of proof sets...

You'll also want a prestige set, a premier set, and the new limited edition silver proof sets (includes an ASE).

Yes that's right, thanks, I didn't realise it was called a type set.

Do you want clad or silver proofs?

The clad proofs have a continuous run from 1971 to present. While the modern silver proofs have run continuous from 1992 to present. In 1999 the Mint & Proof sets doubled in size with the introduction of the State Quarter program.

You have to remember there are 4 SBA proofs; 1979, 1980, 1981, & 1999. The 1999 SBA proof was only sold individually and not part of the 1999 proof set.

What you should do is purchase a copy of the Red Book by Whitman Publishing. In the back there are lists of all the Proof and Uncirc sets ever made. Along with the original purchase prices and approximate present value.

I would personally do a type set in the following manner.

One from 1950-1954. These were the first proof sets and were in little square boxes with the coins individually packaged. Check this thread to see pics of these sets. https://goccf.com/t/175515

Next I would do a 1963. I choose that year because it is the last Franklin set and an example of the flat pack envelope sets.
Next, a 1964. First (and only 90% silver) Kennedy, last silver quarters and dimes until 92.
Then 1965. This is the first year of the three Special Mint Sets (SMS). It was in the flat pack.
66 or 67. SMS as well, but very different packaging.
1970. This is the last 40% silver Kennedy and an example of the new packaging started in 1968.
1973. This is the first year Ikes were in the regular proof set. It is also the year they changed to black packaging and the display holder.
1979. First SBA.
1980. Packaging change.
1983. For this one year they went back to the packaging from 68. No clue why they did that.
1984. First year of the purple sets.
1994. First year of the green sets.
1999. First year of the State Quarters program.
2000. First year of the Sacagawea dollar.
2007. First year of the Presidential dollars.
2010. First year of the America The Beautiful ( ATB) quarters.

That covers the regular proof sets fairly well I think. I did NOT go into large date/small date, type 1 and 2 things like that. And I skipped 76 because you said not that one, though I certainly would.

Then any year Prestige proof set, Premier proof set and the Limited Edition set. I would also suggest getting the three coin 40% silver proof 76 set. You can also look into getting one brown box 40% Ike dollar and the 99 proof SBA. Both of these were individual issue proof coins not in the sets.

That would be a pretty good type set of proofs I think.

Thanks for such a comprehensive post. Working through that lot will keep me busy!

Also I already have both 1976 sets hence me saying not those ones.

How about the 2009 set, first year of the NA dollars and the territorial quarters (not really part of the State Quarters or the ATB Quarters)

I think that they make a Red Book just for proof and mint sets. You may want to get that.

Conder, I have always viewed that as the skin tag of the State Quarters. They did it just to shut up the idiot politicians in DC. I have them, but they are forgettable at best. But that is just my opinion.
Rest in Peace

You should include the 2009 for the 4 different Lincolns, in bronze material.
