So I decided to pick up a 7070 and try to learn something about the US coins. I just recently completed a set of MS jeffersons and decided I dont want to do another complete set of coins right now.

So in my quest to complete a 7070, I want the first coin I purchase to be the first one listed in the book. Draped Bust Half Cent 1800-1808.

I would like coins I purchase to be problem free. I realize quality from coin to coin will vary, but I'm okay with that. I want details to be visible on all the coins so when I show someone the book they can get an idea of what the coin actually looked like instead of a mushed up piece of copper.

My budget for this particular coin is about $200 (less means I get more coins). I would love to get a nice problem free coin in about VF condition.

So I make this post to track my progress and ask for suggestions/help. I would also like to hear any fun facts about this particular 7070 hole that you would like to share!

Part 1 of many!

$200 for a 1800-1808 Large Cent in VF is not viable. $200 would get you a good quality VG-10.

I think lukkyseven is looking for a Draped Bust Half Cent (not Large Cent) in about VF for $200. That shouldn't be too hard. I bought a nice Draped Bust Half Cent graded F15 by ICG last month for under $100 on ebay.

Unless you are dealing with someone you know to be reputable, I would suggest getting a certified one in a problem-free holder. A lot of the raw ones online have problems that can't always be detected in the photos.

My bad, a 1905, 1806 or 1808 Half Cent in Problem-Free VF should not be hard to find although you may have to settle for some ungraded stuff. There's plenty of stuff on ebay.

One of the first considerations for Half Cents of that issue is planchet quality.
The US was still importing them from England and many were porous.
So try to find one with good looking surfaces.
$200 for a VF is right on the edge.

When I started my type set my grade criterium was XF or better.
And I held to that for quite a while.
My Draped Bust Half Cent 1800-1808 ended up being an AU-58 BN (but I suspect my pockets are somewhat deeper than yours).
It cost me about $420.

XF or better huh... I can see that getting pricey down the road. That's not a bad idea though. These coins do look good in XF like the one posted above. That coin would be perfect without the scratches. The one TypeCoin posted doesn't appeal to me for some reason, but I appreciate the post.

I might have to bump up my pockets on this one because a lot of the VF just aren't doing it for me.

I can vouch for that. My 7099 has about 6 of his coins in it

Kanga nailed it. The AU EAC's I have picked up in the past have been well north of $200. The coin you are currently watching has already went past the price it looks like it is worth. But that is just my opinion. There are plenty good examples out there I would keep looking. I have bought from the eBayer I mentioned before. He has a good assortment. But there are a lot of goodones out there. Good luck on your search.

I got mine for $68 raw on ebay so I think it is very possible; I do think this was one of my better ebay scores though for the price. The pictures are overly light on the obverse and overly dark on the reverse - the overall color is somewhere between.
