I was thinking of starting to collect the walking liberty as I really love the ASE and I don't know the tell tell signs for grading one.

That's probably a MS61 at best due to the scratches and hairlines.

the coin overall and surfaces are tough to tell through the mylar
regardless of technical appointments against the reliefs, which is what I believe you are asking for, also concentrate on spotting original surfaces as well.

You should check photograde from PCGS website as it is free to use and can at least provide a head start toward handling as many as you can until you get very good at picking raw coins off in your travels.

good luck

You guys are harsh.
This coin is no less than MS63 IMO, and has a shot at 64 on a good day.
