The correct term is SMALL DATE and, no, this is not a small date. It's a regular large date.

Concur that the coin is a 1970-S large date LMC. Sorry Mike ... this is not the small date you were hoping for. David

I suspect "level 7" is another term for a small date. But a small date in MS63...I'd sell that coin for at least $50.

I've heard of them (small dates)as being referred to as a "High Seven" years ago.

This is a large date variety where the top is level not same as normal large date.. wait for a expert to chime in. I never did any research as I was only focusing on the small dates I got Read ken potters Level 7 http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/...tCompare.htm The LIBERTY may also be weak on a Large Date so this is a poor indicator of the type but a strong LIBERTY does indicate that it is NOT the scarce Small Date variety. While the font of the entire date is completely different than on the Large Date it is most apparent on "9" (which is the type of 1965-1969). The "9" on this variety shows the tail of the upper loop tapered more to a point and curved up slightly higher than on the Large Date variety. This one is often referred to as the "Level 7" variety by more advanced specialists. Coin courtesy of Gary Kelly.

Looks like a normal cent to me. No plating, just of the red variety. Also looks like a large data a.k.a. low 7. Telling the differnce between a SM and LG date of this year gets tricky at times tough and sometimes better pics result in different outcomes.
I am looking at purchasing a 1970-s SM date myself and have been thrown off on a few graded ones (PCGS or ANACS) which say it's a small date however on the non-detailed photos looks like a large date to me.

Ok, time to break out the image again. Note the bottom of the 7 in the date on your coin. See how it is lower than the small date example. Here is a trick: Take a straight piece of paper or a business card, lay it on your monitor over the coin image. see how the tops of the card shows a straight line and the bottom the devices as well. On the large date they don't line up.

Yours is a more common Large Date. But looking at pics didn't really do it for me when I was learning. I bought a 1970 S small date proof set and pulled the cent out to add to my comparison binder. By looking at the coins side by side, it's so much easier to tell. Since every cent collector needs one of these to complete a set, I recommend buying one. Then if you find one you can sell or trade the duplicate. Just sayin'

Thanks guys they are hard to tell. And for those that asked Coin World calls it a level 7. I use their magazine because they list many DDO and ddrs that are not in books or grey sheet and some vams to for you new dollar collectors.

Try to remember the Large Dated Cents have blunt ends in the 9, the Small Dated Cent has BOTH ends in the 9 pointed..........
