Not what I would call the most attractive toning. Whatever it was in contact with gave it uneven toning.

Not very attractive toning there. I'd say heat was used.

Toning looks very odd. how can you tell if heat was used?

No, it looks as if it was in a stack of 2x2s that was rubber banded and it was on the end. I have seen plenty of coins with that affect. And heat being applied is more than likely the trunk of a car in the summer.
