I had purchased and then listed a 1909 S VDB Lincoln Penny on ebay. My listing was kicked off because it was reported that my penny was counterfeit by the coin community watch group. After this, I visited two sites that showed the differences between a genuine coin and a counterfeit and for the life of me, I don't see where mine is not legit. Is there any way I can send a photo to someone who might be able to point this out to me? Thanks Edited by cityclerk 05/04/2014 8:17 pm

Quote: Is there any way I can send a photo to someone...... Well, you've got a perfect group of some experts here! Although not an expert, I can tell you a few things.... The mintmark position/shape on the obverse looks all wrong.

I think this is what I read and saw as the fourth position and I think it is right. I also saw where the beginning and end of the S were to be vertical, which it is. The shape however was the biggest question that I had.

Need a better picture of both sides of this coin. From the onset, the S looks large.

First of all, to CCF! I can see just at a glance why this coin was kicked off of ebay; the mint-mark is way off. It just isn't the right shape. People like to counterfeit this date in particular because it is the "king of American key dates" and people will pay good money for them. Many people buying these coins don't know the difference between the real deal and a fake. The most common way of counterfeiting this date (which may be the case on your coin) is by adding an S mint-mark to a common 1909 VDB. Besides the mint-mark, there is another way to tell if it is a 1909 VDB with an added S. Look at the period between the d and the b in VDB on the reverse. On the '09-VDB, the period is close up against the d; on a genuine '09-S VDB the period is in the exact center. Hope this helps.

Some said they needed better pics so I added two more. This is the best that I had.

I agree with everyone else in that with these photos the mint mark looks large, but straight on shots of both sides with a close up of the date/MM and of the V.D.B. Would be of great help and we would be able to tell you with fair certiany wether it's "legit" or not. And I'm not sure if you know or not but this site (coincommunity) has no affiation with "the coin community watch" of ebay, were more than happy to help and we've quite the panel of experts here, I just wanted to make sure you knew that we arnt the watch group that pulled your listing, lol.

Thanks everyone for the info. I think enough doubts have arisen for me to seek a refund. I can't afford to take these kinds of chances. I have a lot to learn.

In the Counterfeit Detection section of the current issue of the Numismatist (May 2014, page 110-111) their is a great piece on 1909-S VDB Lincolns and how to detect counterfeits. They also show the only four types of observe dies used with good pictures.

Even with the poor pictures I can tell it's one of the Chinese fakes.

I also noticed that your example has the reverse die chip found on the Chinese copy coins found on the leftmost wheat stalk.

Ouch ... 3 year + zombie thread now back to life. To our newest member ... be advised that as a coin community we tend to reflect poorly on bringing back old threads ... Always welcome new input. David
